Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

UPGRADE!!!

I own a 2009 CAAD9-6 and I've caught the sickness.

Someone recommend the best bang for the buck upgrade.

Comfortable saddle, shorts, and shoes
Bike computer with heart rate (or power meter)
Nice tires
I like my American Classic 420s a lot, but they don't seem very well-liked here.

Where to start?
the seat and wheels are the first thing that come to mind.

I ditched the Shimano 105 wheels and now ride the Ksyrium ES wheels that came with my Specialzed..
The Ponza saddle was recently replaced with a Specialized Toupe (also from the specialized) so much nicer.

The only other thing I swapped was the handlebars - went with FSA K-Wing compact which was a perfect fit for me.

My only beef with the newer Caad9s is the level of components.... I know there are a lot of riders who would love an Ultegra (or dare I say DA) component set.

Here's what you do- ride a lot. Figure out if anything bugs you. Once you've figured that out, determine the cause. If it can only be solved by equipment change, than do it.

Does no one believe in the old "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" axiom anymore?

I have a 2008 CADD9-6. I also wonder about upgrading. I also changed by seat to the Specialized Toupe because I broke the seat rail on the stock seat. I have changed tires a couple times. I have had the bottom bracket redone twice. I guess, I ride till it breaks.

Not when you can get Dura-Ace and Ultegra dirt cheap. No.

Define dirt cheap.

I haven't seen anything that I would consider dirt cheap when you consider putting it on a $1,000 bicycle.

At PBK prices, I don't think a $1,500 group on a $1,000 bike is dirt cheap

get a bike fit and coach to help you improve your performance.

put your money in the bank or purchase some chains, cassettes, bar tape, tires, tubes, and other things you need to change reguarly

might sound like a downer, but those things will reap way more "bang for your buck" than a new drivetrain, new hoops, or new handlebars fer cryin' out loud.

This. Pay particular attention to body/bike interfaces: saddle/shorts, bars/tape/gloves, pedals/shoes. Better interfaces = more comfort = longer and harder rides = better fitness = upgraded bike.
