Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Student bikes

What bikes do you all suggest for all-around student bikes? Like for a student moving away from home without a car? My favorites would be the Trek Soho S and the Osobike.

I have a Soho S as my around town bike. If you live around a place with not many big hills it will suit you fine as a very low maintenance commuter.

College campus' are notorious for having bikes stolen. 'Twas me, I'd get a beater bike. Hit up CL and don't spend any more than you mind losing.

old rigid MTB that you can turn into a singlespeed since the gears probably won't work very well.

easy to maintain, hard to break.

Something else for your nice bike(s), but don't ride them around campus, they'll get scratched/dinged/stolen.

I agree about getting a cheap beater bike. Students don't maintain their bikes very well and they get stolen a lot. Heavy duty tires will help with the poor road/path conditions on campus, as well as greatly reducing flats.

CL, Pawn shops, Thrift stores, and check with the campus PD to see if there's sales for abandoned bikes. I've been registering some pretty cool rigs lately that students have found for next to nothing.
