Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just bought a bike and.. :(

Hello everyone.

I just bought my first road bike yesterday (Caad9 6), since i got the bike from the store late i managed to ride on it only 10 minutes yesterday it looked like everything is ok. Today i made my first training for 1 hour(i think it is better to start easy and check how i am gonna fill tomorrow) but...

I can't stay in lower position long since my Ass hurts even after yesterday 10 minutes i felt it just a bit today but after morning 1 hour lower end of both my butt chicks hurts. They dont hurt as i sit but when i try to touch it ... (better not) i am so anxious to ride and cant w8 till tomorrow but when i am thinking about sitting on it OMG.

Is it normal at the beginning that butt chicks (lower part just over a line where butt turns into leg) may hurt or maybe my saddle is to far behind? I am using padded shorts (cannondale if its matters).

Should take about 10,000 miles for your soft butt to get tuff.
Wear two pairs of bike shorts when your sore.

C'est la vie

It is normal, you will get used to it. Keep riding.

Butt chicks are freaky, especially when they stare at you with that 'oh, what i would do to you' look.

HTFU. Seriously though, it's going to take some time/miles for your butt to get used to anything new, and what's new is everything that you're riding on.

Give it some time, don't ride 'til it hurts but extend your ride distance/time some each day or every other day.

It's like any other athletic endeavour, you're not good at it when you start and you get better with time. As Greg LeMond said: "It doesn't get easier, you get faster".

Keep riding. Callouses will develop. Then the only problem is when you're getting freaky with someone for the first time they stop and ask, "How did you get callouses there?"

But more seriously, give it a few more rides. It is normal. I don't ride as much in the winter so I get a little of that each spring.

With a new bike, did the shop do a basic fitting of you to the bike? It's amazing what a slight tweak of the seat (fore/back, up/down, tilt) can do for your riding comfort.

They said to try it out and come back for fitting if it will be needed they kinda give lifetime fitting for this bike but besides the frame size they didnt do anything.

It helps to change hand positions on the bars and to stand up once in awhile.

+1 on the fitting. I have a new CAAD9 too and I swear I was going to put on a new seat and tie a pillow to it. Then last weekend, I was at the shop and asked one of the fitters to give me a private fitting on a trainer. It took about 15 minutes but when it was over, I was riding with the utmost comfort. What I previously thought was a horrible seat was actually comfortable. I highly recommend this fitting! It will make a huge difference. The salesman's "basic fitting" isn't enough.

what do you mean by "lower position"? most people do not ride down on the drops but up on the flat of the bar or on the hoods.

If they put it on a trainer, make sure they put in an old QR skewer as trainers often mess up the skewers.

I actually kind of like the Ponza, but everybody's different. In my experience, that particular saddle likes to point a degree or two down from horizontal.

I always bring a few wrenches with me when I'm riding new equipment. That way I can make slight adjustments during the ride. Even a small seat adjustment can be the difference between joy & hell. You may just need to tip it up or down a bit. Same goes for handlebar position, cleats, and seat height.

I just got a CAAD9-7 and I agree, with the saddle down a little in the front it is much better, when I had it "level" it was killing my nads.

You just need to get used to riding. After a while you won't get soreness, regardless of how you ride, & which part of the handlebars you hold. Also you'll start to understand how your bike fits you and whether adjustments will help.

Many people seem to ride holding the bar tops, or over the brake/shifter hoods, others spend more time in the drops, which is usually how I ride, unless there's steep climbing involved. The best part about road bike bars is that they give you the chance to change your grip and riding position - this makes long rides more comfortable.

You're complaining about the wrong thing. Your LEGS should hurt much more than your butt after a one hour ride -- I don't care how crummy your conditioning is.

BTW, the legs hurting thing should never go away. If it does, you're not riding fast enough.

The saddle on my new bike felt comfy on the first ride, but the next day my butt was sore. I took some ibuprofin about an hour before my next ride. At first I felt the soreness, but then it started to go away. Since then, the soreness has gotten progressively better.

However, there are tons of saddle positions to try, and if that doesn't work, tons of saddles as well.

My advice for now: If your butt hurts too much to sit, just do sprints till the burning in your legs is worse than the pain in your butt.
