Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Long Sleeve Jerseys

Since the weather is beginning to turn, I've been looking for a long sleeve jersey, or winter jersey. Anyone have any recommendations? does anyone here use long sleeves? Apparently the arm warmers are used often too, and they can be removed and stored in the jersey pocket. Are arm warners a good item to buy? Do you size them comparable to your jersey size?

sorry for the newbie questions, but this will be my first winter road biking. thanks in advance.

david

**edit..... and what about the leg warmers, do they even stay pulled up? I think I'd have to go with the long pants bibs.

I use the Terramar Outlast Merino Wool long-sleeve shirt and pants. They are basically a base layer and any kind of shell works well over them. I've never used arm or leg warmers.
For something nicer-looking, the Brooks Podium Half-Zip and the Saucony Transition Half-Zip are good.

I'm thinking arm and leg warmers. I bought full-winter kits last December. But for starting long fall rides at below 60, and finishing at above 70, stripping and pocketing warmers makes good sense. For short cool rides, long-sleeve jerseys and tights work for people who prefer being warm, short-sleeves and shorts work for people who prefer to sweat less.

I've been wearing my long sleeves all summer. It's the only jersey I have.
In winter you need more though, it's not enough to stay warm.

I wear long sleeves alot to avoid sun exposure. I find I like to wear a compression shirt under a short sleeve shirt when the weather is cooler. I use cheap Champion compression shirts I found at Target.

Go to the Winter Cycling forum:
https://www.bikeforums.net/winter-cycling/

But also ...

Try MEC for long-sleeved jerseys:

And yes, leg warmers stay up ... I haven't had any that haven't. If you're concerned, go with tights.

Weather here's starting to turn - the other way! *whoo-hooo!!* Anyways, this may be foreign to you guys in the States. I picked myself up some of the long-sleeved base clothing rugby players use, made by Canterbury. (Not NFL or Aussie rules, "normal" rugby.) Works like a charm - really kept me quite warm. Short-sleeved cycling jersey over it and no problem.

Strangely enough, it does not become overly warm when the sun's out and things start heating up. Don't know how it works, but it works for me. Supposed to help muscles keep warm and rid them of toxins as well. (Yeah, whatever...) They also have a cooling version (short-sleeved) which I'm going to try for the summer.

I kinda want a summer-oriented long-sleeve jersey. I've just got this bad feeling that one of these days, my skin (which has a mind of it's own, plus an attitude problem) is going to develop an allergy to sunscreen. Right now, I'm not wearing jerseys, just a long-sleeved wicking t-shirt, during the summer.
