Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

MTB in the winter months for road riders

Was reading that during the cold wet winter months, it's best to put up the road bike and ride mountain bikes. I've only been riding since May after several decades off, so all of this is pretty new to me. Just wondering what the more seasoned road riders do? Is it recommended for cross-training?

I live in the No Cal/Sacramento area, so mostly dry during the winter, but it's supposed to be a wet winter. I'm 53 and have a bad back, so that's one of the reasons I had to quit riding MX and go to road riding.

Thanks

Ride whatever you want. I ride road and MTB year round. The MTB gets more time in the off-season, and vice versa.

We don't get any snow, mostly really cold rain, and 32-45 degrees. I just jump on one of my fendered touring bikes, and keep riding.,,,,BD

Its warmer in the woods since you are sheltered from the wind and you are also going slower.

Two years ago, i did lots of mtb night riding. Last year I was doing cyclocross so didn't get out as much

Since I just started riding in May, it was about then that I first heard about cyclocross. Not really sure what it is yet other than road bikes with knobbies. From what I've read I would still need another bike, so since I already have a MTB, even though it's old, I would need to ride what I have for now.

Get a touring bike like this: https://www.rei.com/product/784362

Or a cross bike like this: https://www.bianchiusa.com/09-bicycle...-d2-volpe.html

Put some fenders & 4-season tires on it and ride.

He doesn't want to get another bike right now. He's just asking about cross training on his mtb in the winter.

Hipchip, some great fun to be had mountain biking in the winter. If you do go off road when it's wet, choose your trails carefully. Pick a sandy or rocky area so you don't make ruts. Near here there is an area of sandstone hills where there is never any mud. I've ridden there in a driving rainstorm and had a great time.

I also ride my mtb on the road sometimes and then I don't have to clean the road bike.

I guess I could road ride the MTB too, at times, as the knobs would route the water away.
