Helmet Cam: NEV, June 17, 2009
I'm cheating here a bit, but I normally post helmet cam clips here. This clip is at the track, but I hope that you folks will find it interesting. If it's any consolation I'm using one of my precious spare crit-bend road bars on the track bike (3ttt), as well as an ancient Specialized TriSpoke front wheel (clincher).
New England Velodrome is extremely grassroots, just got started a little while ago. It's a former go-kart track, hence the weird 318m length, the shallow banking, and the lack of an infield. It's a very promising venue, and the folks there really have their heart set on making things work. As do I, actually. They have a 'cross series and a BMX track too, but I probably won't give either of them a shot.
Anyway I had avoided posting the clip until I could find the photographer that I saw around, and it ends up I found him. He's posted here too, under croth, but I think he hasn't been around for a while.
Thanks to Craig Roth for use of the pictures (croth in picasa).

I'm pretty excited about the effort to try and build an indoor velodrome in Boston. I don't know how feasible it is, but it would be amazing if they pulled it off.

It's safe to do fast efforts. In fact, I would highly recommend them, even for non-racers, because it widens your horizons. Most riders will break 190 rpm the first time they try, and within a day or three will be in the low 200s. This is on a freewheel bike (cassette or single speed) on a trainer.
I wouldn't recommend max rpm efforts with clipless pedals on a fixed gear flywheel the first time out. I'd use the stock pedals which allow you to ditch the pedals if you lose coordination. Once you can follow the pedals down from your max rpm (and you get appropriate cranks), you can move up to clipless pedals.
If you lose coordination at max rpm with clipless you can probably hurt something.
