Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Garmin Edge 705 issue

Ok the Campy shifting issue thread seems to have gone pretty well So lets try another. For some reason when I import my ride data from my 705 using Training Center it no longer imports map data or elevation data. I know the unit is recording this data because this time I checked them before I plugged it into my PC. 8/22 was the last ride with all data. Earlier this week in an attempt to fix the issue I updated both the 705 and Training Center to the latest versions which didn't fix the issue.

What happened here?

do you really mean "Import", or "Receive from Device"?

Receive from Device....I use the button that looks like an Edge unit with the arrow going away from it. Have downloaded hundreds of rides worth of info and everything has worked fine until after 8/22.

I know a lot of people don't like Training Center but it gives me all the info I need so it is what I use.....

Well one thing you can do is make sure the TCX files are well formed XML. You can download pretty much any XML editor, open the file from the "GARMIN" drive, and run whatever option it has to check the validy of the XML. Many editors won't even open the file if it is bad. I like "First Object XML Editor" personally.

Other than that, I would suggest downloading SportTracks and import the file into that to see if you get the data.

What do you mean by map data? The only time maps go back and forth between the device and your computer is with the map loader. It should be sending elevation data though because that is recorded.

I assume he meant the trackpoint coordinates.

Correct. One thing of note here is that I am on a Vista PC if that matters...Training Center has to be run in Admin mode which I am doing.

Garmin Training Center is pretty lame. You should download SportTracks and try it out. Its free, and much more robust.

I'm having an issue with SportTracks and the 705 that I haven't had before. I just got a new (refurbed) 705 under warranty. When I try to import with ST, it reads the data, but then it says "no data was imported." The ride data is reset on the 705, so it's doing something. So basically I can't upload any post-ride data now.

Ok so I finally have a connection to the 705 and.......I get about the same thing I do in Training Center. All rides after 8/22 lack course and elevation data.

WTF is going on?

This happened to me last month. It turned out the problem (at least in my case) was that the Laps folder was corrupted and was showing up as a file instead of a folder. I deleted the laps file and created a new folder in the Garmin labelled "Laps" and it has worked fine since then.

I would restore factory settings and see where that gets you.

Hmm Interesting I too have a "Laps" file in my History folder. So does the Laps folder go in Garmin or in History?

I would put the folder wherever the file is now, and would delete the file.

Ok so deleting the lap file and doing a reset of the Edge did the trick. I wonder how it got corrupted...but whatever as long as I know the fix.
