Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Z1 or Ottrott

I have been riding a Giant TCR for about 5 years.. Now I decided that this is my mid life crisis and I want to treat myself to new bike. Not that I need a new ride. Choice is between Parlee Z1 or Serotta Ottrott. Anyone who has owned or ridden either bike let me know your opinions.

I have an Ottrott but haven't owned or ridden the Parlee (though LBS carries both) so I can't give you much of a comparison. The shop owner positioned the Parlee as lighter and the Ottrott as more durable - and recommended the Ottrott for what that is worth.

My Ottrott is very smooth and fits great. I'll bet both bikes are very good.

I'm sure the Ottrott is a ncie bike. However IMHO, Ti/CF mixes are very 2002, when CF was beginning to take over things, and Ti builders thought they needed to add carbon to stay competitive.

Personally, I'd go either all CF or all Ti.

And you do realize the Ottrott is going to be noticeably heavier than a Gaint TCR Advanced?

Hi sicycle,

You are kind of comparing oranges to tangerines.

Both manufacturers make great custom frames. Why are you looking at a Ti-carbon mix vs. an all carbon frame?

I've had two Serottas -- one stock steel and one custom carbon. Both were (are) the best frames that I have ever owned in those materials. I have never ridden a Parlee but I would expect it to ride very well too.

At that price level in a custom frame it is going to come down to small personal preferences or your ability to work with a dealer who can do a proper job of sizing the frame. Of course, the ideal way to do it is to go directly to Serotta or Parlee for a fitting.

I can completely empathize with your mid-life crisis comment. My Serotta was a 50th birthday present to myself. It was either that or a Lotus. My wife was glad I picked the bike.

My buddy has a Z1 and a Moots. I have a Z4. If you don't need custom, why not a Pinerello Prince or a Storck Fascenario? The Prince would be a bargain. If you're going all mid-life, why not get something sharp?

BTW, the Ottrott would not be on my list.
