Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help on deciding on a new bike (Beginner)

Hey, I'm sort of new to long distance road biking. I have been biking for years, and quite a bit in the last year commuting to work (only about 6 miles). I just did a local 100 mile bike tour for the first time (my first time ever riding more then 40 miles in a day), and plan on participating in the Minnesotan Iron Man (100 miles) bike tour next year. I currently ride a very heavy off road mountain bike that my dad had used in multiple Iron Man rides (he put about 1000 miles on it). During this last tour the front derailleur died, while the rear derailleur started to give out by mile 95.

Needless to say, time for a new bike, an actual road bike. I'm looking for something under $1,000 USD. I am hoping for a full carbon lightweight frame. I am looking at this one: https://www.roadbikeoutlet.com/gavin-...cing-bike.html and am thinking about jumping on it now. It's my size, and fits my tastes.

Question is, anyone here see anything better out there for me? Any better deals? Anything to be wary of on the bike I linked? Thanks for any help.

Are we aloud to bump? If not, sorry. I'm about to click the order button, making sure there are no last minute protests

I'm not familiar with that frame, but it doesn't look like a bad deal. You could get better components on an aluminum bike for the same money...

I am not familiar with it either but it doesn't seem like a bad deal at all. If you know what size you should order, go for it.

Is shimano in the bike world at all related to the shimano in the fishing world? lol

BTW, I did just buy it. I hear great things about the company and the bike itself has good reviews. I would rather have a really good frame and mediocre parts that I can change out over time, but from what I have researched the Shimano line is pretty good, especially for entry level.

Yes, it's the same Shimano company. When I worked at a bike shop, my manager would frequently get deals or gifts from his distributor in the form of fishing equipment.

you didnt do too bad for the price. the wheels will be the worst part of the bike i imagine.

if you're doing century rides on an old mountain bike, this will be a tremendous leap forward for you by anyones standards.

A friend ordered a Gavin from online and likes it. I think it's (color grey) a nice looking bike in person. Enjoy and ride lots!

I own a very nice Shimano fishing rig, I would never spend 400 bucks on a reel when my 90 dollar Shimano out preforms them all. I have confidence in my new mostly Shimano parts bike now :-P

I can only imagine the difference. That bike probably weights close to 40 pounds or more and my new Gavin's UPS shipping page says the whole package is 24 pounds, a lot of which is just the foam, so I am pumped. Plus the overall ease of riding an actual road bike has me foaming at the mouth as it is. No more friction from my rear stack or ridiculously loud grinding from the front derailleur.

I'm quite nearly dying with anticipation. Too much excitement to contain....

This would be a 16 speed bike, right? 8 in the back and two in the front?
