Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looking for longer handlebar tape.

Last week I bought a new 3T Ergonova handlebar which has a wing or egg shaped top bar. I also bought new Fizik Microtex Handlebar Tape. The tape came up shorter on top than I wanted or expected. I may have overlapped the tape a little too much but I'm thinking also that the shape of the top bar contributed to this. Can anyone recommend a brand of bar tape that may be longer in length than normal?

Hello. both are likely causes. for some reason bartape has been 'onesize' for years. I am not sure who determined the correct lenght but personally I always thought is should be longer. I am not sure if anyone makes it longer.

Fizik tape doesn't stretch as well, so it tends to run tight.

The Bontrager gel stuff is very stretchy and really goes a long way. Cinelli cork is usually good in that regard as well.

If you can find it...Token brand tape. Token sponsored my team this year and I got a couple of rolls to try out . They really provide a LOT of tape. Quality so far has been quite good.

You don't tape the top of wing bars.

If you DO want to tape them, buy extra tape and wrap in two sections, from the ends up to the levers, then from the levers to the stem. I've done that with the 50cm bars on my Atlantis for years.

If I recall, Scott makes long bar tape because it was needed to wrap their "drop-in" bars back in the 90's. There are also some companies that sell it in one long strip that you're supposed to cut in half. Buy two rolls (one for each side) and you'll have plenty.

Measure the length of your wrap and see if this stuff is long enough. It is the highest quality wrap there is. In addition to the quality, the key is the chamfering so that it will lay flat.

https://handlebra.com/product-information
They also have a new waterproof version that does not require treatment.

From the Handlebra website.
"The Wrap itself…..

The leather used is of the highest quality. HandleBra looked at tons of hides before settling in on this formulation. It is chamfered to lay relatively flat. Each strip is at least 84 inches and width is about 1 inch. In order to generate the 84 plus inch length, strips may be mated once. The mate is chamfered, glued and then pressed. Two (2) strips equals one bikes worth. HandleBra is priced per bike NOT per strip. You do indeed receive two (2) strips."
