Do I need a new tire?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Do I need a new tire?

After two flats, I got myself a real pump so I can pump the wheel up to the correct pressure. However, when pumping up my rear tire, I noticed a tear in the sidewall and the tube was bulging out of the tear. I tried patching up the tear, but it still doesn't look good:

Do I need a new tire? If yes, should I get the Gator Skins? I just want something tough and trouble free .

Continental 4-Seasons also has the same side wall protection as the Gator Skins.

Gatorskins have the sidewall protection so you wouldn't have that issue, but the actual tread of the tire isn't much tougher I've noticed. I went through 2 gatorskins(both rear tire) this summer, I replace tires after the 2nd flat and do use superglue on any slits. For comparison sake, I had just one set of gp4000's the previous summer.

If you're broke you could get more mileage out of that tire with a boot. (clif bar wrapper, dollar bill, park boot patch, etc)

I don't think I would take a chance with that tire. I would probably put a boot in it and use it on a trainer.

My experience is substantially different than this. I just replaced my Gatorskins after 5000 mi, mostly because I've had 2 flats in the last week. I believe that the flats were due to glass, and think that these would not have been flats if the tires were new. However, I don't think 5000 miles is bad durability (or even 4000 mi, which is probably when I should have changed the tires). Its not like I'm light (>200 pounds). I'm pretty happy with Gatorskins.

did you pitch that 'old' tire yet? if not cut about a 3-4" section out of it. then trim off the wire bead (if equipt) and put it in your seat bag. it might save the day and get you home next time you cut a sidewall.
