Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just got some free shoes, but am I SOL?

Here are my pedals

and here are my shoes

Does that work? I feel like I'm missing something...

Your Ultegra pedals are road SPD-SL pedals. The Specialized shoes you got are for mountain bike type pedals, and they use different cleats, so they will not work with your pedals. At least, I believe that is the case.

I'm not sure if those are compatable. If I get your problem, you have a pedal that uses the SPD-SL three bolt pattern and shoe with two holes. I know that they make adapters but I think the adapters allow you to use SPD cleats on SPD-SL shoes ( 2 bolt cleats on 3 bolt shoes).

Not sure if you can do that. The road version of the shoe, which would be a comparable price, would have the three bolt pattern.

So what would be wiser, new shoes or new pedals?

The shoes would be better, as the road pedals you already have (and some nice ones at that), plus road pedals have a wide platform (they're big) for stability, whereas MTB pedals (i think) are rather tiny.
