Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Roadies: Where are you stowin your Rain gear ?

I understand Road bikes need to be lean and mean - and all I ever see are tiny underseat packs -

So are you guys stashing your rain gear in your rear jersey pockets ? -

What is rain gear? If you are talking about a nylon vest or something, back pocket. Rolled up. Tightly.

Rain jacket, rain pants, & helmet cover, all in the saddle bag.
I actually bought a bag large enough to be useful.

My skin, shorts, and jersey are only dry for the first ten minutes when it's sunny outside. What advantage would I have hauling rain gear that's probably less comfortable than the rain itself?

haha... Great responses -

I should have said - in colder weather - here in tampa the last thing you want in a rainstorm in the summer is a chunk of plastic around you - at 95 DEgrees... let it rain -

I've been commuting on a hybrid for 8 months and yesterday I purch'd my first road bike - it's amazing - I just found out HOW you guys ride so fast -

Same here. I've been caught in torrential rain many times, and the only thing I wished was dry was my feet and the inside of my shoes. The rest I can do OK being wet so long as it is not very cold.

I can't possibly see how you would not sweat buckets inside the water proof jackets and pants, which defeats the entire purpose of the "rain gear". Not to mention the added heat factor with it too.

You have obviously never experienced CO rain.
Next year, come out here and climb Mt Evans;
Time your ride so you summit well after 12 noon.
Then come back and tell us what you think about carrying rain gear.

Living in southern California, rain is a rare beast, especially the past couple of years. When I carry it, my rain jacket fits in a jersey pocket, so do my rain pants.

Sometimes, when I ride in the rain and stop and talk with a non-bike rider, they are amazed at my audacious behavior. Hey, rain is only water, and it's never cold here, even when it rains.

I have distant memories of "warm" rain when I lived in IN, MI, & IL.

Here in CO it has one temperature regardless of season: Freezing cold.
I learned to respect it the day I got caught in a downpour in the mountains at 9000' on Peak-to-Peak highway.
All I had was a helmet cover and a rain jacket.
Within two miles I was hypothermic, and through sheer dumb luck happened on a campground office.
I spent two hours in the office waiting for the storm to let up, and using their clothes dryer.

I had something similar happen to me last week. I was spinning along the gulf coast about to cross the Ocean Springs bridge (fun climb) when out of no where an afternoon shower caught me off guard, kept up for about fifteen minutes, then subsided. I went from perfectly normal to utterly refreshed in less than a mile! It was horrible!
