Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Please rate my fitness level on this 30 mile ride

** edit, looks like TMI, so...

30 mile ride with wind @ 11mph (SSW), 19 mph gusts first few miles, then wind @ 24 mph (S), 34 mph gusts most of the rest of ride, 728 feet of climbing, almost 10 minutes of stop time due to traffic lights, wind stopped me dead in my tracks at times, descents were work against the wind, 17.3 mph average speed.

pissed off at the wind. I really wanted a chance during a low-to-no wind day to bump up my numbers ;-)

You've been on this forum for almost 8 years and haven't figured out this is a pointless question?

The most commonly used metric for cycling performance is the Rhomberg Calculation. I ran your numbers through the model and your score was 563.28

What was mine? Make sure you factor in that I am a veteran...and put me down for whatever sex and ethnic background get the most points.

The question is never pointless if one has a motive for asking it and is interested in the expected varied responses. I've learned that from 8 years on this forum.

You say pointless, I say good question.

nah, I'm curious how other people deal with the wind and how their performance suffers in similar conditions.

If I get the chance, I'll be out there again trying to better the effort, sans wind.

usually we just ride and don't worry about making excuses for why our performance may have been better or worse than some mythical metric - each ride is different, it is what it is.

If you really want to know how you compare to your peers, there is an easy solution...race.

You also have to factor in Mars' gravitational pull on your pedals which can adversely affect your cadence on partly cloudy days when Mars is at a 76.2 degree angle in the sky.

I would think that with such precise wind measurements, calculating your fitness level would be a walk in the park.

Good point...we don't know if he is a vet or this ethnic background. Indeed, until we measure his ear height differential, it's all just speculation.

It gets really windy here, especially in the spring. I just tell myself --over and over-- if it was good enough for Eddy, it's good enough for me.

I agree. I conclude from this ride that I am fit.
