Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I got the worst luck.

I always seem to get a flat tire once a week. It is starting to get me rather angry. Is there any advice to help a guy out like me. Keep in mind that I do a lot of city riding to get to school.

Make sure you air up your tires before every ride.

What tires/tubes are you running? That's way too often. I flatted twice in the last 1500 miles. The second time was because I didn't find that tiny piece of glass the first.

Are you checking your tire for debris/glass in your tire before you fix your flats?

My rims came with crappy thin rubber rim strips. I changed to Velox tape and that has essentially solved my problems with flats. Since the change, I've gotten two flats in almost 3000 miles (one because I hit a big chunk of concrete in the road and the other was never resolved).

Agree. Check location of the puncture. An edge of a partly exposed spoke hole is oftentimes the culprit. Otherwise, tire liners solve most issues. Or just embrace the 21st century and go tubeless w/ sealant!

Apart from getting good rim tape, running yr fingers along the inside of the tire to check for punctures etc, maybe get a tire made for city riding. Something like a Conti Gatorskin...completely bullet proof as far as punctures go. A bit heavy, but even tradeoff i think.

I flatted out 3 times (with 2 spares) in the NYC Century couple of yrs back on Michelins Prorace. And decided to switch to these if i know the terrain is going have much debris.

Pump up before every ride, every ride!
Check flatted tubes and rim to determine if puncture is in same spot each time you flat.
Change rim tape if necessary.
Get beefier tires, like conti gators or specialized armadillos.

Does your pump have a gauge? Make sure you are inflating to the correct PSI for your weight. I had a problem with pinch flats years ago because I wasn't putting in enough air (no gauge).

From Psimet's tip thread:
Proper inflation is the easiet way to avoid flats.

Tire Width=20: Pressure(psi) = (0.33 * Rider Weight in lbs) + 63.33
Tire Width=23: Pressure(psi) = (0.33 * Rider Weight in lbs) + 53.33
Tire Width=25: Pressure(psi) = (0.33 * Rider Weight in lbs) + 43.33
Tire Width=28: Pressure(psi) = (0.33 * Rider Weight in lbs) + 33.33

Tire Width=32: Pressure(psi) = (0.17 * Rider Weight in lbs) + 41.67
Tire Width=37: Pressure(psi) = (0.17 * Rider Weight in lbs) + 26.67

Example: You are 150lbs running 28's

Pressure (psi) = (0.33*150) +33.33 = 82.83psi (rear)
Front Pressure = .9*Rear Pressure = .9*82.83psi = 74.55psi front

Thorn resistant tubes.

You can run with the same tires until the rubber wears off to the cloth thread and not flat once.
