Cycling + other sports = pain?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling + other sports = pain?

I've been cycling for about 5 years. In the last couple of years this has been the only activity/sport I've been invovled with. In the last two weeks I started playing hockey. I played maybe once each year in the last several years, now I'm playing once a week. After each game (a day or two after) I've had some different pains that I've never had before. After the first game my left arm/hand was sore and it made holding the handlebars painful. Now my right knee hurts (haven't biked yet since the pain started).

Has anyone mixed cycling with hockey, or other sports where the effort is intense, and something different than what you're used to, and you've developed aches & pains.

I like hockey and with winter not far off it will be a nice change of pace from riding indoors on the trainer...but anymore odd pains and I may have to quit. I'm hoping that this is just because it's new and I'll feel better after a couple of more games.

Through college I would cycle and play several other sports recreationally, including golf, tennis, racquetball, softball. I would play these other sports 1-3 days a week and cycle 1-2 days a week. (different sports at different times of year mostly)
recently I have taken to weight lifting and have noticed that my legs are not recovering as quickly as I would like. To help in recovery I have started taking Protene and it definitely seems to be helping. Could still be the placebo affect though... Might be worth a try.

I think you will find that after a few weeks you will find yourself acclimating to the new movements and demands of the new sport.

I tend to look at it this way:
Pick what you want to be best at.
To excel in everything is an impossibility and one of the ****y things about being a human.

Speaking of hockey, where are my Caps fans at!! Im a HUGE Washington Capitals fan. This is our year, we have enough to finally beat the refs and penguins this year. 6-1 so far vs. the leafs.

As for pain, no shyt dude, of coarse your going to get beat up and feel new pain, hockey is almost as physical as American Football. F, they even fight in hockey and its allowed. What did you expect? Riding your granny gear over the ice and scoring five hole goals. This is a proper time to use the HTFU comment.

I fence, which isn't terrible as far as effort is concerned (lots of short, repeated bursts of anaerobic activity) but is pretty rough on your legs as far as wear and tear goes. I'm starting to get shin splints, but nothing worse than that.

You use different muscles in different sports. It's good to crosstrain.

That's a crappy philosophy. What if you missed out on something you might enjoy because you couldn't be the best at it? I play a lot of different sports and I'm definitely not the best at any of them but I can't imagine giving up any of them just for the sheer joy of competition and fun.

To the original poster how old are you? I play basketball 2-3 times a week and ride on the weekends and I find those lingering pains stick around longer as I've gotten older more so then playing multiple sports. I'm sure the contact of the sport is adding some bumps bruises you don't get on the bike either. You have been away from the sport a while so I'm sure you're using muscle groups you normally don't use skating vs cycling. Hopefully as you use them more you'll need less recovery time.

I've been playing hockey about three times a week, and riding whenever I can for years now, I think that it's a good combination of activities. If my knees are sore from hockey, a good ride makes them feel better - don't ask me why.

I did ride while having the sore knee and it felt great...even climbing. I was relieved that cycling didn't hurt, and didn't seem to agrevate my sore knee. It already feels a better, but it's frustrating as I would like to do both activities over the winter.

To someone else's question, I'm 35 (no longer a spring chicken!).

Wait till your 50. You have no idea what a new pain everyday is like. As someone else said, the HTFU comment applies here.

Keep your self in good shape and do what you like, but keep things in perspective. Everything in moderation. As someone else said "your no spring chicken any more"

Beats the alternative, I guess.

About three years ago my routine was pretty intense. 1-1.5 hrs on the bike before work 4-5 days a week. Then it was 1-1.5 hrs at the gym after work for 2-4 days a week (yes, bike in the AM, gym in the PM). On the weekends it was 60-70 miles on Sat (over 1 mile elevation gain) in the AM, then 18 holes of golf, finishing by 2-3 pm, then swimming for 1-2 hours. Sun was a recovery ride of 20-30 miles... if I didn't want to play video games.

I was in the best shape of my life, but recently I've been focusing on cycling and am now the strongest on the bike I have ever been. I don't have the same amount of free time I used to, so I have to get the most out of every mile, and every hour.
