Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Michelin Pro3 Race alternatives (Cheaper OR Better)

For my fast training rides/ triathlon races

I've just about used up my Pro Races, and have been (knock on wood) nearly flat free throughout. I did have to replace one of the tires early on due to a glass slash, though. Point being, I don't need something a whole lot more durable.

Any other suggestions for tires with comparable rolling resistance? Faster? Cheaper? Gripper? All of the above?

Best price I've found is $79 for a pair at bikeisland.com. Other places are a couple bucks more on average.

I think most people would recommend GP4000's. Not any cheaper though.

Those are out of stock, but the 4000S are in stock.
https://www.probikekit.com/display.php?code=Y1014
what's the difference? All I can find is that the black versions of each might be the same, but colored 4000 tires may be different in compound.

black GP4000 = GP4000 S

and:

With the new Black Chili Compound rolling resistance is reduced by 26%, grip is increased by 30% and mileage is increased by 5%.

I like 4000s. Got my first flats at just about 4000 mi, one a wire-crap puncture, another a snake-bite on ****-bad rumble-strip the likes of which I had never seen before. I got another set, about 1000 mi so far no flats.

Training rides? I'd suggest Vittoria Rubino Pro.
You can read a few reviews about it here.

No love for the Attack/ Force combo? I keep getting tempted to try them. I take it the GP4000S is better?

My Pro Race 3 slit like crazy, so I tried Continental GP 4000s, but they wore out pretty quickly. So now I'm using Vittoria Rubino Pros. $47 a pair on PBK. I can't comment on handling or ride or cornering since I'm not a tire afficionardo.

Panaracer has a new lightweight facing slick, the Extreme Evo3. I haven't received mine yet, but panaracer has a history of making high-quality tires at a reasonable price. They previously haven't really had an entry in the lightweight road slick category. These are pretty light, and a good price - maybe 30 bucks (not sure; I get ep prices). I'll be sure to post some impressions once I've got a few miles on them. I'm looking forward to trying them out.

Are they definitely the same tyre? I know the black GP4000 now also has the Black Chili compound yet Conti still market both the GP4000 and the GP4000 S. Why?

Oh, and another tyre worth a look is the Vredestein Fortezza Tricomp. To be honest a top of the line clincher from any of the major manufacturers is likely to be good enough that you won't feel the difference.

I've read some good reports on the Serfas Seca tires. They go for $30 or $35.

That's not really an answer to the question.

Timely post. I had a pro 3 flat twice today. One hole was on the main tread, the other was near it. I hadn't had any trouble then two in a day, kinda steamrolls. I'm having a hard time wanting more pro's. Thanks for the tip on the 4000 S. I'll try a couple. I've been using Gators in the past but then they to got two cuts right on the main surface.

Yes it is.
