Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Long Story, simple question

Hi All,

First post here. I got into cycling about 5 years back when I was 20. I was working my way through college and managed to save enough to get a late 80's (i think) 61 or 63cm specialized allez double. I got it some new kevlar tires, pedals and shoes and I was good to go. Total with tune up and all that was about $500. I did the 66 mile leg of the NY Century that year. College got crazy and I stopped cycling for a while. My cousin cycles quite a bit so i gave him my Allez. He is same size as me. I then graduated and got into kiteboading. That has been my obsession and adrenaline rush for the last 3-4 years.

My father passed due to MS 1.5 years ago and i figured it was time to honor him, so I borrowed my Allez from my cousin (sounds funny) and trained for a month. This past weekend i did the 68 mile MS Bike Tour in NYC in a bit over 4 hours on the bike. I am pretty happy with myself. I also raised $1580 for the MS Society. The ride reminded me how much peace and relaxation cycling brings me. BUT, I need to return my bike to my cousin since I did give it to him, lol.

My one year anniversary with my wife is end of November and the holidays are right around the corner so i figure i combine the two and get myself a new bike.

So now for the question....

I am looking to get a new bike, or possibly slightly used. I am 6'2" and weight in at 255lbs. I dont really want to spend more than $1000. And i still need to get new shoes.

I was looking at the new Allez's and the Sport Compact/Double/Triple but I am open to suggestions. I am hoping you guys and gals would weight in with your opinions.

Thanks for the time and help.

For a sub $1000 bike, you are on the right track. try out the new Allez...the Steel Allez is even less expensive if you are so inclined. visit your LBS and start getting fitted for a bike. Welcome back!

Other than weight is there an advantage to the carbon fiber fork and seat shaft over the steel? And does the improved Shimano gears make that big a deal?

I have no problems spending money if it is worth it, just want to be sure it is, lol.
