Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It looks like all of those companies (and Cannondale) are part of CSG, which is owned by Dorel.

"Cycling Sports Group (CSG), a division of Dorel Industries..."

Really? Your source please?
Are you saying that ownership of different brand names imply that the same people manufacture the different brands in the same place?

Back in the 80's, Chrysler owned Lamborghini for a while before it was sold to MegaTech in Indonesia. Did this mean that Lamborghini was made by Chrysler?

You're right, I was mistaken. I knew Cannondale was bought by them but I got Pacific and Dorel mixed up.

It's the same company, but Canondale is still largely independent of the [new] parent. There was talk of moving the American production offshore, not sure if it actually happened yet. Over time it is likely that it will be consolidated with the others, because that is Dorel's business model.

I think some of their frames will still be made in the USA -- a lot of this has been hashed-out before:

'made in USA' /= 100% made in USA

no way for me to prove what I'm saying because I have no evidence.
all they do is put the decals on it and paint it. Frame tubing and welding done in Taiwan.
or
entire frame manufactured in Taiwan and shipped over to USA, then assembled in USA.

You're on the right track. Depending upon the industry, there are regulations on the percentage of USA content needed to slap that sticker on there. Up until a couple years ago, BMW shipped their cars to Port Hueneme take advantage of the free-trade zone between the Port of Long Beach and Hueneme. US workers would finish the assembly by bolting on the side-view mirrors. This was enough to qualify these cars for the "Made in USA" moniker.

I suspect the British economy is a picture of what we will eventually become - a service economy. Maybe these distinctions won't matter in a new world economy. I'm sure Dorel will be smart enough not to dilute Cannondale by trickling down their tech to lower brands, broadening their distribution and cutting corners. That said, it's sad to see another American company bite the dust.

Don't be so sure. The bottom line will dictate what they do. If the suits decide there's more money in trickle down tech or spec'ing a C-dale branded line for sale to the dept store crowd than sticking to the cycling enthusiast market then it shall be done.

So how about Merida then. I heard Merida was a daughter company from Cannondale. Which makes it a granddaughter company from Pacific? Or is Merida owned by Pacific as well?

Merida is a Taiwanese CF company that owns a controlling stake in Specialized. I believe that most of the Cannondale CF offerings are actually made by TopKey in Taiwan, the same outfit that does Fuji CF.

Merida and Cannondale are not related though...that would make Specialized a second cousin (I think...I'm losing track of the family tree now) to Cannondale, which would probably cause Mike Sinyard to have some kind of an aneurism as his brain fractured in an effort to understand how this unholy union came to be.

Suddenly it's like Arkansas in a way, just fewer trailers and more gold teeth...

the "suits" are very aware of cannondale's image as well as it's niche.

the people currently calling the shots have no interest in diluting the brand. this i know.
