Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

YOUR weekend rides/exercise ... weekend before Christmas!

It's the weekend before Christmas ... and how many of you are out riding?!?! Or doing other exercise activities??

I am not riding this weekend, unfortunately, unless I can drag myself out for a ride after work tomorrow. Instead, I'm working. Today (Saturday) was my 7th straight day of work, and tomorrow (Sunday) will be my 8th day. Rumor has it, I might get a day off Monday ... finally.

Work, however, is a workout. Today I lifted approx. 2400 kg (5291 lbs) of cherries, and walked approx 960 steps during the 8 hours I was actually working, not including any walking at morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, and after work.

Rowan and I were going to do a fairly local 100 km ride called the Bah Humbug today ... I'm disappointed we missed that.

2 feet of snow on the way with about 6" already on the ground at 6:00 AM. Looks like a no go for the road machines. I'm mounting my 2.5" studded tires on my SS MTB this AM for a jaunt around local fields and trails before it gets too deep. Which makes me think, "How deep must snow be before one can no longer ride in it?"

Three day weekend for me, took Friday off to participate in some events at my daughter's school. Way too cold outside for my liking, so no riding time. Hit the gym on Friday for my core/upper body workout, and took a spin class first thing this morning. Tomorrow I'll get in some exercise at home....removing the 10" of snow that's supposed to arrive overnight.

I wish it was like that here. It's 17" so far and still snowing. Even the health club is closed so I can't work out there.

Longest ride in December so far - weather this month has not been cooperative. But today I got out for 40 miles solo, 40 degrees, no wind.

85 miles with the club today. A beautiful day, a bit windy, but clear and warm. This is the payoff for living here.

Went to the track for the first time; three hours of safety and 'racing'.

Then went for 2.5 hours in the mountains.

God I'm fat and slow.

Got in 20 miles in after noontime; that's in between stuff to do around the house.
Have kids coming in from several states and a bunch of grandkids + 1 great-grandson. They'll all be here at our place for X-mas, with a couple of them staying over 'bout 10 days. That'll limit our riding a bit!
But hey, this happens only around this time of year.
Oh, temp was only 71 degrees.
Pedal on!

Intended to go on the B group ride today, as I was planning on going with a Hill Climbing Training with JoelS tomorrow, but as luck would have it, the B group changed their schedule and left half an hour before I got there, leaving me with the A group. I've been with the A group couple times, but always turned around midway with a few others, mainly because among those few others was the LBS owner, who had to go back to open the shop on time.

The whole ride was a blast. Was really fast, involved a lot of climbing, and to boot, I kept up with them... most of the way. Did 3000' of climbing on the 52 mi ride, with a 16.7 mph average... although we were doing 25-35 on flats, and even faster downhill. But anyways, I lost the group on the way back about 5 miles before the LBS. I am still proud of myself that I was able to make it that far without dying. Granted, I don't plan on riding or even walking much for the next day or so.

42 miles with my wife on the trail (Sat). Pretty breezy, check out the bushes behind her in the scene where I ask how she feels. Darn I am diggin' this Flip video thingy!

How much riding do I need to do to preemptively burn off 10 pounds of fruitcake?

I did a 70k shopping trip today, it was nice and dry so I pulled out my non-winter bike for the first time in weeks, and "ow, my neck". My winter bike's got straight bars and they're pretty high up. I really wasn't used to the position.

I also did a snow ride a couple of days ago with my brother. We spent an hour trying to climb one hill, with no luck. Screw you White Valley Rd.

God I'm fat and slow.
I'll see your fat and slow and raise you a fat, slow and lazy.

I had wrist cramps when I had my Sirrus. That is one of the reasons why I switched to a road bike. Little did I know how much money I would be spending on road bike and related clothes/accessories in the coming years... haha.

I rode on Monday and hit the gym yesterday. I think I also did light calisthenics on Wednesday, but I don't remember. I usually go to the gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but I had finals this week, which messed things up.

Did 47 miles on the fixed gear this morning down towards the Delta. It was flat, cold, and foggy. Not much to write about, but it sure is nice to go to a dinner party running a 2500 kcal deficit.
