Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New hubs slightly damaged. Let it go, or refuse to accept them?

I ordered some new wheels with White Industries H2 hubs. The edges of the hub seem to be slightly crushed, as shown in the picture below. I think it's because of they way they were packed in the box, with the hub edges bumping against each other. The outer part of the hubs were exposed through a hole in the box on each side (is this a normal way to pack and ship wheels???)

Thoughts? Should I refuse to accept these hubs, or just file down the rough edges so they fit better and move on?

Refuse...Send back...That's BS! Worst case scenario you have to buy the replacement part from White.

Here's the outside of the box, with the hub exposed. Is this really the way to ship wheels????

I would send it back and have them pay the shipping to send it back. How were the wheels packaged. There should be some padding so that doesn't happen.

The box is in the post above yours. Inside the box the wheels had minimal padding (a couple thicknesses of paper) and were essentially clanking together.

send the company an e-mail or call them (who was this anyway??)

when i've ordered wheels they come with heavy plastic caps over the hubs to prevent this, this was the companies fault for not properly packaging these wheels for shipping.

Can you share who did the build? That's an odd way to send wheels.

If these wheels are from a dealer that sells wheel sets regularly then +1

If they are from someone selling on ebay or unloading their personal set of wheels then maybe you have to suck it up.

I have also received a box like that. In my case it was a whole bike ( an original 7-11 team bike from 1986 ) and when the UPS driver came to my place I happened to be outside. The carton was on it's side on the floor of the truck and when he pulled it out he dragged the exposed axle across the sandpaper like anti-slip on the floor. The shipper didn't put a "do not lay flat" on the carton so I was kind of screwed.

If it was UPS, and if they just left it at your doorstep, take it back, say you didn't open it and want to refuse the package due to the damage on the outside of the box.

The wheels should have come with axle protectors or at least some sort of bubble wrap to protect the wheels from bumping around.

I can only imagine the attention to detail the wheel builder spent on the wheels themselves...

Luckily that is the removable cap end. Like a $4 part that can be replaced with one allen wrench. Replacement is covered here in figures 22 - 24:

https://www.whiteind.com/images/REAR_HUB_ADJUSTMENT.pdf

But if the other end (on the cassette side of the hub) is messed up too, then you have bigger problems. That end is pressed into the axle and the whole axle needs to be replaced. Definately doable, but a PITA.

I would fix it myself, but give whoever shipped it that way complete HELL. They owe you something for their stupidity and your frustration.

To be fair, the picture is uber-zoomed in. The damage does not look nearly as bad to the human eye.

But it does cause the wheel to not fit in the fork quite right. And the packing was ridiculously bad. So I emailed and asked for a complete refund.

Regarding who this is, I'd rather wait to see if they make it right first before outting them. It's no one I see mentioned on this forum.

EDIT: The wheels are going back for a full refund. Thanks for the input.

MCODave. That looks pretty cool! Thanks for the info. But since they're going back I don't have to worry about it.

In the box picture it appears they tried to reinforce the box with a + pattern of packing tape. i.e. this has happened to them before and I'm sure they've gotten complaints. This is a half-arsed solution. Contact them. Get them to pay for return shipping and have them replace the wheels ASAP.

Now I know how those companies can charge so little for shipping.
