Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Are ~2200g carbon clinchers too "heavy"?

...for crits? I have the Pro-Lite Gavias in mind which are Front 1002 g , Rear 1170 g at 50mm deep. How suitable are these for flat-ish crit racing under a light 130lb rider? Thanks!

I would think that at 130 lbs you shouldn't be spending a lot of time up front in which case the aero benefits of the deeper profile wheels would be minimal and offset by the extra weight that you will need to accelerate a few hundred times during the course of the race.

There should be some kind of law that says a wheelset that's over 2kg doesn't get to have "Lite" anywhere in the name.

That seems steep in weight for 50mm rims. Even Williams 58 clinchers fall in the 1800 range.

depends on your typical strategy for these crits. are you a breakaway rider? do you sit in for the first 75% of the race? do you respond to every attack?

we need more info

And anything that weighs 2200g needs "Heavy" in the name.

These Mavic Downhill MTB wheels weigh 2260g. You could probably throw them off a building and then ride off.

Just sayin'.

Thanks for all the quick replies. I'm fairly new to racing and normally I don't give too much care to equipment but I can get this fairly cheaply at the moment and I'm racing on Shimano R500s right now. Since I'm new to racing, I'm spending most of the time playing catch up and haven't quite developed a style as of yet. I know everyone is going to say develop the engine first but I can get them really quite cheaply and they would be seen as a investment for the future.

What style of riding would these wheels best suit? Thanks again guys.

Impressive technology. How do you get wheels to be that heavy? Top secret heavy metals?

I personally don't think any deal is worth a 2200g set of road bike wheels. you can get a 1421g wheelset for $275 so unless you're paying $100 or less, I really don't think it's worth it... just my opinion.

So the consensus is that the boat anchor weight of these wheels negates any aero effects of a 50mm rim? I almost wasted a few hundred bucks! I thought they were cheap compared to the other 50mm clinchers on the market but in hindsight still aren't very cheap. The search continues...

The '500' series Shimano wheels (assuming the ones in the ones in this list aren't too different from what you have) aren't too "unaero", and probably much lighter. I have Token C50a clinchers, which use the same Gigantex rims as the Pro-lites, and are about the same weight. I don't like them much for crits, coz they feel a little dead to me when I accelerate. I don't think it's the weight, coz they'e about the same as my 32-spoke DT RR 1.2s, which feel much more lively; it could be a bit of flex -- I dunno

According to Bop Dopolina's site, the 50mm Gigantex clinchers rims are 690g each, plus or minus 20g!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Using 531's list of aerodynamic wheels, what is a good budget one on that list (i'm guessing towards the bottom of the list).

Those zips are crazy. I checked out the price. $AUD5,000 for a pair OMG WTF!!

But yea, whats a good budget one (value for money)? I'm looking at getting into triathlons.
