Depends on the temperature. For anything below 50's, I prefer tights. I recently purchased a set of Ibex knickers and while they worked fine for the temperature at the time (low 50's), any colder and I would have had some frozed calves. The knickers were quite comfortable though.

I've never tried knickers, but I'd imagine less wet material on the lower legs might be nice in the rain.

I just don't understand the point of knickers. If it's cold enough that I need to cover my knees, I'm going to want to cover the rest of my legs too.

I bought a pair of knickers this year and I really like them. I've used them in mid 40 degree weather and they've been fine, where my summer bibs wouldn't have been; I have a pair of tights as well but I like the exposed calf, feels refreshing.

Well I have found knickers to be useful in that they have enough coverage to keep you warm in the beginning part of the ride, yet keep your legs exposed enough so that as you warm up or as the temperature goes up it is still comfortable to ride in. Of course, having just shorts + knee/leg warmers is more flexible yes.

Lightweight tights below 55-60 (adjust up or down a few degrees depending on whether it's sunny, or windy or damp or overcast)
Heavier tights below 35 degrees
Both when in the 20s

im currently look at buying a pair of bib knickers...I already have knee warmers but they are of the lycra variety...they work for a windy day, but anything under about 60 its time to go heavier...I think im going to try to the knickers and then as it gets colder, ill put on some Robuix leg warmers under, it it will give me the same effect as tights...I just dont need tights right now, not cold enough...

I wear these (shorts underneath):
Adidas Response CPW Race Tights
I wore them over the weekend with temps in 40s (F) and have worn them with temps in 30s. Very comfortable, they have the climawarm/wind logo on them.

I want to pick up some bib knickers this fall.
I currently have regular bibs, knee warmers, and unpadded tights. On days where I use the knee warmers, I sometimes find that the regular bibs are too thin and let the wind through. My knees will be warm, but other parts not so much. The knickers I've looked at are thicker material all over. I'll use taller wool socks to cover up my ankles.
Being short with only a 30" inseam, I've yet to find tights or leg warmers that don't bunch up a bit at the bottom. That's something I've found to be uncomfortable. So I figure the knickers will take care of the days before it gets cold enough to really need the full leg coverage.

low 40's = lightweight tights
Mid to low 30's to below= heavyweight tights.
If I had knickers I would use them from hig 30's up to 50.

Maybe it depends on what you consider cold enough to cover your knees. For me that's from 65 degrees on down, but covering my calves in the 45-65 range is overkill. Hence knee warmers or bib knickers are my preference there. Leg warmers in the 30-45 range, tights below that.

i have bib knickers from sugoi, they are good until it gets below 50. I get cold easy though so anything under 50 and I have to wear tights.
