Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Dropping 200g?

Ok, this is totally superfluous, I know that. Simply weight weenie stuff, I want to get my CAAD9 down below 17lbs. and I really can't yet do a new groupset. I still have the stock 105 on it. Would love to get to a SRAM mix, eventually...

So, two choices that will/can drop about 200g: 1) new fork to replace the CDale Ultra, 2) new crankset to replace the 105.

Which would I "feel" more on the bike...lighter, stiffer crank or a lighter more responsive fork?

Or just squirrel the bucks away for the groupset and wait for it?

EDIT: I should add I have new wheels, saddle, stem, seatpost, bars...I've picked away the easy stuff.

Unless your crankset is junk, you won't notice the difference.

Well, I guess I can't drop 200g with a crankset...even SRAM Red is 760g non-BB30, the 105 is 722+99 for 821g total. Hmmm...

Find a used Cannondale premium or premium plus fork.

The weight difference between those and the stock fork is insane. I got a used premium plus, and it's really nice.

Or you could buy an edge aftermarket fork. Those rock as well.

I think a fork would be the best upgrade in terms of performance and weight. A better fork can really improve handling and confidence.

After wheels, that's a good later upgrade.

what is the exact weight of your caad9 and how far away from 17 lbs are you? what is the full build? wheels? how are you weighing it?

I have a caad8 with full ultegra, premium plus fork, SLR saddle, etc. I recently shaved off 244 grams from it and am still at like 17.5 lbs or more. I just tried a bathroom scale and got 17.8 but there was too much variation to be sure.

Here is the thread on how I shaved a lot of weight.

Edge 1.0 or 2.0 fork (depending at how much you'd like to spend), or Easton EC90 crankset would do the trick. Fork would make more of a difference though.

I'm coming to that conclusion, plus, I had the chance to ride Rival this weekend...wow. I really like the double tap and the shifter shape. I wish there were somewhere you could go and get the REAL weights of the components.

I have a saved search on eBay just for that as a matter of fact. They're hard to come by. There's one now but the steerer is too short for me...I need 8.5"

Just picked up a new 2010 CAAD9 4. Just a idea on weights for you all. A 50cm with 105 pedals and a Specialized Toupe saddle came out to be 18.14 lbs. This also includes all the reflectors on the bike.

Do you ride out of the saddle a lot?

If so, lighter seatpost and saddle. Something like KCNC Ti Pro Lite Seatpost (143g, 180lb weight limit)) or the legendary Thomson Masterpiece (160g) paired with a saddle like the Selle Italia Carbonio Flow (125g). You will actually feel the difference.

I was using a $20 Kalloy seatpost (390g!) temporarily for a bike I just built up because I needed different a different clamp and the thing just made the bike really unbalanced when riding out of the saddle.

Also you can drop weight by going with KCNC skewers (46g).

You can also use Veloplugs in your wheels (You'll save around 30g for both wheels; I hated these things btw).

I like kimconyc's response. Pick components with hidden potential - post, seat, stem, bottle cages, skewers.

Three other things - tubes, rim strip, tire. Rim strips can be heavy, ditto "heavy" tires.

It may not mean anything in the whole scheme of things but it's fun trying to lighten up a bike.

Have fun,
cdr

If one falls out while you are changing a flat and you lose it, when it's 20 degrees outside, you are screwed.

After a while, the edges start compressing into the spoke holes.

A lot more expensive than the tried and tested Velox cloth tape. I'd rather just spend $4 and carry and extra 30g. I'm going to sweat out 30g after 5 minutes anyway when I am hanging on for dear life...

I also tried super light tubes (which can actually save you 100g) during my weight weenie phase but you will get a lot more flats. This was not for me...

At 140 lbs I can't really lose any weight,
So I choose to make my bike lighter.

=D

Go KCNC parts from ebay or fairwheelbikes:

Seatpost
Skewers

If you aren't running decent tires:

Conti GP4000s or Attack/Force
Michelin Pro Race 3

+ latex tubes (michelin prefered)... didn't get "more" flats then on regular tubes as above poster.

You can also just change up your brake cables only to Nokon. You will save around 60 grams vs your Shimano cable+housing.

No need to spend big money for the whole Nokon package.

You didn't mention this, but maybe you can shave 50 grams with a better tire, 25 grams with lightweight tubes, 30 grams with a different chain, 30 grams with some velo plugs.

The two posters who mentioned their weights jogged my memory. I misspoke earlier, I'm at 18.1 or so...weighed on two different digital shipping scales here at the house. I'm around 18 trying to get into 17. The Park scale at the LBS verified that as pretty darned close. I need to ride over and weigh it there again.

It's a 54cm '09 CAAD9-5, here's what I've changed from stock:
  • Controltech Wepost seat post, full carbon 27.2x300, 172g
  • Controltech Scored 99 stem, scandium, 100mm, 112g
  • Controltech Carbon Comp saddle, full carbon, 127g
  • 3T Ergonova Team handlebar, full carbon, 200g
  • ROL Race SL wheels (w/ Conti GP4000s), lost 462g from the stock Shimano WH-RS10 and Maxxis Fuse tires weighing everything (wheels, tires, tubes, cassette...I have two cassettes).
  • Elite Custom Race bottle cages, white, 40g each
  • Controltech Comp-TS headset spacer, full carbon 35mm, 11g
  • Shimano PD-5610 pedals, 320g

And again, I have the full, stock 105 still on the bike.

waterblast02: Your 9-4 with Rival and BB30 makes a big difference.

I realize it's overrated...this is a semi-vanity thing (if it were full vanity I'd have gone something lighter out of the box

If you want you could shave off a full pound for fairly cheap. Rough numbers here on what you could save:

100g with tubes (Maxxis Flyweight/Performance Forte Lunar Light)
100g with tires (Schwalbe Ultremo R)
80g with skewers (KCNC)
50g with saddle (Selle Italia SLR)
100g with fork (Cannondale Premium Plus)
40g with chain (KMC X10SL)

Thats over a pound right there. All for fairly cheap. Throw in a crank, pedals and brakes and you could shave off another pound.

What skewers are you using?

How about some Zero Gravity Negative G brakes? Your 105 brakes are listed at 359g! You can save 160g+/- on the brake calipers (including pads) alone!

Plus, Nokon brake cables, and there is your 200g.

Add in some colored KCNC skewers for bling factor and you have yourself nearly 300g possibly in weight savings.

That's a lot of money though for saving around half a pound on the bike.

It's easier just to remember to use the bathroom before you ride IMO.
