Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Winter pants that are not tights ?

Hello,

I'm looking for some winter cycling pants that are not skin tight tights. Can anyone offer a suggestion? Thank you in advance.

I have a pair of Goretex slip over pants (from Cabelas's I think) that I sometimes wear on cold days over my "tights" for some extra windbreak. The problem with anything that isn't skin tight though is that they get into the chain and get stained unless you have a strap on the bottom (kind of dorky).

Mt. Borah Freedom Pant. Relaxed fit, but not too loose for cycling. The web site says good to 45 degrees but I've worn them in the 30s without a base layer.

REI Nova Headwind Pants block wind and are roomy enough for long underwear or tights underneath for those really cold days.

My favorites are the Sporthill ATV cross country pants at REI: https://www.rei.com/product/742353
They are windproof and warm to about 20 degrees F.

Costco (not many Costco posts on the forum..) sells a perfectly decent pair, the brand is called Paradox. They kind of a mid-weight, atheltic/running looking, and work perfectly fine for me. They arn't super tight, but they are also not baggy like sweats.

My wife bought me a 2nd pair last year for Christmas and I hav't even worn them yet because the 1st pair are still in fine shape. Highly recommended for the money.

+1. Add some decent long johns and you're good to about 15 degrees F. I've also used mine for XC skiing and they work great.

+2 on these pants. Won't break the bank, wear over shorts, they have zippers for easy off. They are pretty warm by themselves and you can add leg warmers or base layer underneath.

Speed skaters, and elite xc skiers seem to like these SportHill XC pants for all their winter activities.
But you may need to be terrifically well developed to pull off the look.

+3, I just got a pair of these a few weeks ago and they keep my legs warmer than either my J&G Patrol pants or my Mt. Borah Freedom pants.
