Lets see I use a Fuji Crosstown which is a hybrid on the street so yes I guess that makes it a road bike I think.
I use it to commute to work and back, why because it didn't cost much it gets me to and from work I'm in no hurry but it certainly isn't what you would call slow to me I see an average of 3-5 mph with the same effort.
I prefer the more upright ride because I can see traffic better, much better around me than when on a road bike with drop bars, in rush hour traffic I rather be able to see cars and people than have my head down flying thru traffic expecting others to see me, I trust myself more than them.
So yes I do use a hybrid as a road bike sometimes.

In days of yore, before such fancy inventions as the toilet bike, there was the outhouse bike.
Edit: fixed broken link.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
My Trek 7500 hybrid has been converted to be used as a commutourer (drop bars / 700:28 tyres/ wider gearing) but I have also went on road rides with some friends (cat 4 and 5 riders) and had no trouble keeping up.
For full on racing I have lighter faster bikes but if the course is a little rough or has evil climbs the Trek is very capable.

I spent this whole season on my hybrid, including riding a century and a couple of 100K events. My 25+ year old road bike needed more work/upgrading than I was willing to put into it, and I was saving up for a new road bike for next season. But even though I've now ordered my new road bike, I still plan to do some of my riding on the hybrid. Variety is good.

Incorrect. There are FLAT BAR road bikes. They have a road bike geometry and wheelset; they just don't use drop bars. So don't call them "hybrids." Flat bar road bikes are true road bikes.

Hybrids are a great idea if you like to hit light trails or just like riding on grass or hard packed dirt tracks.
Flatbar road bikes are okay but for anything but commuting, I don't see the point in it. The drop bars on standard road bikes works better because it allows you to switch positions and keep the circulation on your upper arms flowing. A lot of manufacturers tout some of their flat bar road bikes as "fitness bikes" and that's just wrong! If you're riding for fitness you will be out for at least an hour and I'm sure everyone here knows, you will want to be able to switch handlebar positions and a flat bar just doesn't give you that option.

true road bikes have drop bars...just sayin. The putting lipstick on a pig analogy applies here.
