Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Post your custom built wheelset

I've been talking to Psimet lately about a custom built wheelset.

I wanna see how your set came out, built by psimet or not.

Post both pics and specs.

What do you expect it to look like? Are you looking for nonstandard parts, colors, lacing patterns etc?
The vast majority look like this:

IRD Cadence, 28-hole front, 32-hole rear, labels removed (very nice rims, I think psimet has these under the Kinlin brand)

2 layers of Stan's Yellow Tape as rim tape, trimmed to width using razor knife afterwards (super-light)

DT Revolution spokes

Black DT 12mm alloy nipples

Dura-Ace 7850 rear hub (light-ish, ti cassette body won't notch, adjustable bearings)

Ultegra 6600 front hub with SRP titanium axle (affordable, adjustable bearings, light enough)

KCNC skewers, silver, cut precisely to length.

Not much point in posting photos, they look like run-of-the-mill wheels. Those are the ones on my race bike; my road-commuter/rain/training bike is Open Pros on Ultegra hubs, DT 14/15 rear, Revolution front, alloy nipples, 28h/32h, Velox.

No pics yet, but I just finished building my first set - a rebuild actually - as the original rim sidewalls were worn thin on the brake track.
They are Mavic CXP33 on Hope Technology road hubs - Aluminium with a Ti freehub body. Double butted spokes in a regular (some might say boring) 32 count 3 cross pattern.

Front: 28H Deep V, WI H2, sapim cx-ray, brass nipples
Rear: 32H Deep V, WI H2, sapim cx-ray, brass nipples

Have had them for about 15 months, 7,000'ish miles, still true as when I got them (prowheelbuilder). A bit on the heavy side due to the rims, but they're my only wheels and have been solid.

Who makes the pink spokes? I found some colored ones on ebay, but (1) they are only straight guage, (2) they are short because they are meant for BMX, and (3) I don't know the reputation of the brand.

I have an auto guy powdercoat them. I can have any spoke painted any color... Including glow in the dark. The spokes on that wheel are Cxrays. Here are some more.

I was in Psimet's basement when I used his tension meter on these - does that count? I think he also gave them a once over when I was done, maybe.

Ambrosio rims, American Classic high flange hubs, DT Swiss Competition spokes (radial front, 3x rear), the nipples are internal (not my choice, but the rims were dirt cheap). I think they are around 1400 grams.

Nice! Does the powdercoating hold up on the stainless steel or does it chip easily?

It will chip if you apply a scratching force. The finish is similar to the paint on a car.
