Hot wheels - Aero or light?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hot wheels - Aero or light?

I'm a 5'4 136 pound rider. To put it simply: Would I benefit more from lighter wheels, or aero wheels? Planning to buy a new bike in a few months, let's just guesstimate that the bike without ANY wheels will be ~16lbs

Specifically the M28 SL vs R28 Aero 4 found at Neuvation: https://www.neuvationcycling.com/wheels.html

Neither one of those is very aero. In fact, they both have the same rim, so they're probably very similar aerodynamically.

You're better of keeping whatever wheels come on the bike than buying either of those.

Save your money for some real wheels, such as the Soul 50mm, or Neuvation 50mm, similar.

But to answer your simple question, in almost all cases (save for hillclimb TT) you're better off getting aero wheels over light ones.

I think there is less than 1 oz difference between the wheelsets.

Considering the total weight of your bike with wheels there is really no difference in weight.

I would get the "aero" ones which use a flat spoke or do what flatballer says and wait for a good deal.

Check eBay and craigs list, your local bike shop, mail order places like Nashbar and Performance for some deals on good wheels.

When I was closer to your weight (133-142, which covered about 4 years of racing), I used aero wheels to great benefit.

I used light wheels (280 gram rims) when acceleration seemed important, like if there was a hairpin/U-turn in a crit just before the line.

But aero rules.

Go deep. I'd even skip the 50 mm rims. I'd go for 60-70 mm front wheels, 60-80 mm rear ones. I used dual TriSpokes (now sold as HED3) forever as a 135-145 lbs racer. No problems with wind etc.
