Married or Engaged Guys

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The most important decision you'll ever make. (her, not the ring).

me and my gorgeous wife to be (one day) got engaged a year ago - i bought her this custom made platinum and diamond ring you can see which she loves - we're expecting our first child, a little girl, in march and i'll be buying her a locket with chain ...

then, being the luckiest guy in the world she bought me this bob jackson frame and forks for MY engagement present! (and blokes aren't supposed to get them!)

the moral of this story is.............. choose both your fiance and ring carefully!

Go to www.bluenile.com and build her a diamond solitaire, round cut with a platinum setting. Get a diamond with an ideal cut, near white color and decent clarity.

Spend your money on the diamond, not the design.

Marriage- it's everything you've heard about it... and more...

Buy the band on sale at the cheapest place you can- gold is gold.
Then find a gemologist and pick out the stone.

Just buy the best ring you can afford. But keep in mind, a happy wife (fiance) will make life for you much happier too! So skip the bike crap and splurge on her this time. It ain't all about you and your hobby all the time. Show that you can make sacrifices too.

Brownie points = Very Good!

I wonder what this guy did; this is a pretty old thread; maybe I should read all the replies. my current spouse used her grandmothers ring so all I had to buy buy was an matching wedding band. she brought her grandmothers ring to a jeweler with me and together we worked with the jeweler to make something custom that would fit together with the heirloom. I got off cheap. I was going to pay to have the diamonds reset in a new custom ring but the jeweler said that didn't make sense since the old ring was so beautiful. when it was appraised in 1990 it was worth $6,000.00. so who were we to argue, right?

if I were to do it again I would be hard pressed between letting her pick something out and me picking something out. money would be no object. the ring would have to be heirloom quality and not just a stupid giant rock and a plain gold band. it would have to be one of a kind - just like the love of my life. I would search high and low and looks at hundreds of rings in multiple states. I guess I'm leaning toward her ot being involved, but OMG what if she didn't like it? I mean, women are so picky about every little thing - how do women feel about this? THAT'S WHO YOU SHOULD BE ASKING! :-)

BTW; the reason the OP picked this one to marry - "because she's the only one who will put up with him" is a lousy reason. he should really keep looking for someone he can't live without; can't breathe without and dies a little each day he is away from her.

... just sayin'

LOL good luck, sounds like you'll need it.
Depends on the woman. Mine *insisted* that I not spend a lot since we were both broke at the time. I had specific orders not to get a rock. But she wanted something special. So I found a thin gold ring that would normally be used for an engagement band and had several garnets ordered in it with the biggest ones in the center of the ring. The whole thing was $350. She loved it then and still does.

She got me a silver ring with a tsavorite (i.e. green garnet). When we got some money, she thought about getting the same setting in white gold with an emerald, but I like what I have better.

We are not miserly. Rather, we spend where it makes a difference that we notice -- the cheapest of my 4 bikes would be worth over $2K new.

It's been a while since I checked this thread and haven't read through the whole thing, so forgive me if this has been said before.

Check craigslist and eBay. I just bought a ~.50ct diamond ring (I just wanted the diamond, gonna sell the ring and set the rock in something nicer) for my girlfriend earlier today on CL. Only cost $500. Should be able to bring that down to ~$400 after I sell the ring. FWIW, it's around G SI2. Should have cost twice as much.

Great deal, just don't let her find out. Print up a fake reciept or something from the best jeweler in town.

Buying a diamond on Craig's list? You forgot the most important of the four C's in your quality assessment. You have color, carat, and clarity...but what about cut? It could be a one carat, flawless, D color and have a totally out of proportion cut. It would not sparkle, which is what is desired.

Since this thread got quite a few views and responses, I thought I would update my status.

I did purchase the ring and got engaged on Friday, January 29th. It went perfectly and well worth every penny spent. Our wedding date is set for This October. I appreciate all of the help, input and private messages from you all.

Start the slush fund now. Bar ends are a good place to stuff a few 20's.

happy wife happy life.
Seriously, if you found someone who happily puts up with the riding, do what she wants to make her happy. You will be thankful in a big way in the long run.

The morning of my wedding day, my best man showed up at my house on his bike and asked if I wanted to go for a ride....a very long ride. I should of assumed he knew something, as he had been married for about 7 years already. But no, I said I was going to get married today and that's what I did. Seven years later I look at my wife and look at my bike and wonder. Anyway, she wanted a princess cut solitare and a wrap and a wedding band............... Sometimes you should go for long rides with friends.

In case one of the members had their reception on here and it didn't go well, I would rather not say. It's a real nice place and we are very happy with it. Date is set for 10/01/10

You should buy a 1 to 2 karat diamond and let her pick the setting.
Woman generally think bigger is better.

Diamonds are rated and appraised
https://health.learninginfo.org/diamond-ratings.htm
https://www.debeers.com/page/guidance&layout=popups
https://www.gia.edu/

Go research the quality of the diamond at your local jeweler then broaden you search to diamond districts like 47th ST in NYC.
Never buy the diamond without a appraisal, in NYC I would go to Macy's for the appraisal. I would stick with a GIA certified diamond.

Cost is somewhere around $5,000 to $10,000 for good quality.

Diamonds (high quality) generally hold value and do not wear out unlike a bike.
