Broken Red shifter
Zero miles. Zero shifts/spins on repair stand.
Building up the bike, went to make sure the cable was slack before cable-ing the bike. It's not clicking or engaging in any way.
Open up the side panel...something on the spool that the cable wraps around is broke. Real broke. The mechanism itself doesn't even turn.
This sucks. Probably be waiting 2 weeks for the replacement.
Maybe I'll re-think this whole SRAM thing. Back to Shimano for me.

this could happen with any brand, for sure; and it has. If you bought it from an LBS, they definitely should give you a replacement out of their stock. If you bought it off the internet, well... that's the downside of that. But again, not specific to the brand at all...

Where I live, well, let's just say that buying anything like this local is nearly impossible.
As far as pics go:
If you look on the orange/red spool that the cable wraps around, you can see a broken piece just dangling there. As stated, the entire mechanism doesn't move at all.

Oh my, a defective product from a company? Something slipped through QA? Yes, swear them off forever! FOREVER!

BTW, because you don't like the feel of the hoods (and I am guessing with your limited experience you are not the best standard on which to measure such things) does not make a system "crap".
Funny how this place never changes.

That type of part on a Campy ultrashift lever is made of aluminum with a wear resistant coating. Sometimes the weight saving measures backfire.

In all seriousness, I recommend Rival. I have 1k on my rival and I love it. Save some money and get Rival, you won't regret it.

If that piece in the Rival shifter is made of sturdier stuff, then I should definitely go with Rival. I'll take the 2 paperclip weight penalty for a component that is solidly built.

Heck, I have old 8 speed Ultegra levers that I wish would die on me. But they just keep working perfectly everyday...they're on their 3rd bike now. I can't justify, at least in my mind, ditching them and upgrading the drivetrain so long as they work so well.
They're on my weather/beater/off-road/abuse-it-any-way-I-can bike...and those levers just will not flinch. As perfectly smooth and positive as the day they were new. The only way I could abuse them more is if I either poured sand in the internals, or applied a hammer to them.

I should probably have suspected that, and inspected for candy corn. Particularly in the Autumn, post-Halloween.

That doesn't look to me like a manufacturing defect. That appears to be a used (and broken) shifter in a new box.

I ride Red (actually a combo as I still ride 7800 casettes and chain, and Hollogram BB30). If they make it, I've ridden it. I ride it because I think it's the best system out there. And I have my pick of the litter.
FWIW.

Well, wherever you bought it from, I'd be asking them how quickly they can get you a replacement. And anyone claiming "this couldn't happen on campy/shimano" is full of it. All product lines have defects. These things would cost 5 x - 10x the already ridiculous prices in order to eliminate that. This is the actual reason these things have warranties.
