Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

power meter and Garmin

I'll be picking up my new power meter this weekend and while doing research I noticed that a number of them, including the iBike Pro that I'm getting mention how they are compatible with a Garmin unit. I was wondering why you would need 2 fairly good sized bike computers on a bike. Would you simply get the Garmin because it will show you GPS with your cycling functions and therefore replace the other unit? I'm not saying it's good or bad, nor do I plan on getting a Garmin, I'm just curious.

Yes, you only need one computer. If you want GPS along with power funcitons, Garmin is what to buy.

As for the iBike.....have you read reviews on it before buying?

The Garmin is used as a head unit for the power meters. PowerTap has it's own computer as does SRM, but Quarq does not. The Garmin can replace the head unit that are made for the PowerTap and SRM. The iBike can also be used as a head unit for those power meters. I don't see any point to using a Garmin as a head unit for an iBike, which is self-contained (and not so much a "real" power meter as the others). There are new computers coming out that can be used as a head unit instead of the Garmin.
