Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My SEE Experience

Right now, I'm in my senior year of high school and I've never been so stressed out. I'm in the middle of my college search and my AP classes have dumped so much work on me I just have no time for anything anymore. Unfortunately, my cycling has suffered the most, going from 5-6 times a week over the summer to about 5-6 times a month during the school year.

However, my school offers all seniors the option to take the last 9 weeks of school and do an independent project that encompasses many aspects of post-high school life. Students are able to do this project about anything they want as long as it covers areas such as: career choice, community service, technology, healthy lifestyles, etc. Also, students must work at least 5 hours a day on their projects and report to a teacher-mentor every week to keep track of progress. After thinking about it for a while I realized I could easily incorporate biking into this project.

So here is my plan of action for my SEE project (Senior Enrichment Experience).
My project will involve the research and development of a training plan along with the research and development of a nutrition plan. This part will be the one of the bigger parts of my project, taking at least an hour per day to research and develop my plan. This will fall under career choices, because I am actually looking to go into college as a chemist, to hopefully one day study sports nutrition.
The next part will be me implementing this plan on a daily schedule and assessing my progress in races. This will definitely be the most time consuming, especially on those fun high volume, low intensity days. This will fall under healthy lifestyles for obvious reasons.
My last two parts will be me volunteering at local races, club events, etc. and then writing a blog about all of my experiences. The first part kind of covers community service and the second part covers technology.
As for my teacher-mentor, I found out that one of my principals comes in early to school with his cross bike and practices on all of our cross country courses and fields. I'm hoping that he will be willing to work with me through this whole experience.

I still have to go through loads of paperwork and proposals to get this passed by the board, but if it does, I will be the happiest kid alive!
