Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What a difference a tire makes!

Got a new bike this fall...shod with Michelin PR3s....been getting in some solid base training in preparation for next year. Now, as darkness and cold descend upon the region, I changed over to some Conti 25c Ultrasports. WOW! pretty consistently costs me a cog compared to the PR3s, up hill, down hill, flats....I'm going to call it a good training tire, but looking forward to going back to the PR3 or Vittorias come spring.

dont know why you switched to ultrasports, they are one of the worst tires in conti's line-up. they are known for terrible flat resistance, you would have definitely been better off with a gatorskin or the like. i run conti gatorskins year round on my commuter in 23 size, and they have been great.

I chose Conti 4-seasons in a 700 x 28 for my winter bike. They actually measure only 25mm wide mounted and inflated. I don't think they roll much differently than a Michelin PR3. I can drop the pressure down to 85 front and 95 rear with no problem.

If I were you I would have gone with GP4000's. While they're quite expensive up front, I find I can get A LOT of miles without getting flats, even if I'm not super cautious about what I go through. They're not that bad of a performing tire either.

Got the Ultrasports mainly as an inexpensive tire I didn't mine wearing out on the rollers....the road miles this past week have been a bonus....won't be getting these for road riding, that's for sure. Very good experience with other Conti tires (GP 4000s and its prior incarnations over the past many years) Might give the 4-seasons a try, too.
