Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looking for a road bike-Should I bid on this bike?

Here's the link...https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=150393600341

What would be a reasonable bid for this bike? Looks like it has better components(even though older)than most new bikes under $1000. Also looks to truly be in new condition. Are the CXP30 Deep Vs pretty good rims? Let me know your opinions. Thanks

Well I'm 5 11"-6 feet tall with a 32" inseam. All of the 56cm bikes I've tried out in local bike shops have fit the best.

If anything, that bike being NOS is an oddity and interesting. Wonder what the silk road fork feels like when not locked out?

I'd say a 56 cm is a bit small for your height. You'd have plenty of standover but the top tube is going to be short for your size. You could probably ride it but it may not be 'just right'.

As for price, much over the $150 currently bid is probably too high. North of $500 would be way too much. It's not a bad bike but it's just not worth that much.

$1200 for an over under?? Well then, I got under.

Someone else said under too, so at the end of your post, put the odds of Over/Under as follows:

0:3

I think we should negotiate a better O/U though. Say $750.

O/U at 1:3

I have the SR500 version of that bike. It's the same frame with different components. Originally, mine had RSX 7 speed brifters and a triple. The bike has a smaller than typical wheelbase. It doesn't handle as well as my CF Giant (OCR-C), but accelerates better than the Giant, or better than any other road bike I own. The headshock makes for a very nice smooth ride up front but does add to the weight of the bike. I've not had a problem riding it for 65 miles on several club rides. For me the headshock is ideal because I have an injured neck and the shock absorption is a real asset. As for the butt end of the ride, it's a typical Cannondale and is a tad on the stiff side, but not uncomfortable. As a former mountain biker, this was the bike that got me interested in road biking and it was my #1 ride until August of last year. I have several bikes now, but I still put the second most miles on the Cannondale (after the CF Giant) and it is still my rain bike.
As for size, I'm 5'8" with a 30" inseam and mine is the 52cm version. I would estimate that the 56 would be a decent fit for you, but that's only an estimate. As I write this the ebay bid is under $160 plus $50 shipping. For that bike that's an easy bid higher recommendation. In my opinion, a total payout of $400 for that bike is reasonable, maybe even a little higher.
If there is anything else I can help you with, PM me or ask here and I'll check back after work.

Are the parts pretty good on this bike? I did a completed listing search on ebay for several of the parts on the bike. The STI shifters NOS went for about $100-$125. CXP30 SUP rims went for $50+. I'm guessing the frame might be worth $300? I found a set of shimano 600 tri color hubs for $70. Used shimano 600 tri color crankset went for $70.

I'm thinking $500 would be an awesome price for this bike...I looked at other $500 bikes and all of the components are tiagra and sora...and frames that probably aren't as good. I don't know maybe I'm not using the correct logic here. That's why I'm asking.

I'd pay $800 for that....no particular reason to justify that amount, just want to blow $800 on bike stuff.

To me, you're using mostly the right logic. The only thing that would worry me is the number of miles on the bike and if the frame and parts are in good condition, but thats a mute point if it truly is brand new old stock. It'd be good a good buy with ~0 miles on it IMO. The parts are a little old for some people to justify buying, but if you aren't a stickler about new stuff and you don't need a state of the art frame, get it. I would, but its about 10cm to small for me.

Yes, Shimano Tri-Color is very desirable and will command extra dollars. They are sought after over on the C&V forum. I updated my SR-500 to an 8 speed using those same Shimano 600 brifters. They are REALLY nice shifting units. I also have RSX 7 speed on one bike, 105 8 speed on another and used to have SORA 8 speed on a Bianchi. The Shimano 600 8 speed shifters are much smoother than any of those. Sorry, I've never owned DA so I can't compare.

I'd say that if he felt the most comfortable on 56's at the LBS, then the 56 is probably right for him. Height and inseam doesn't directly translate into a bike size. I'm 6'-1" with a 32" inseam and ride a 56. I can ride a Trek 58 because of the shorter top tube, but prefer a 56 with most bikes.

I'm tempted to buy it even though it wouldn't fit me. A NOS complete 600 group is worth at least $300 alone. I love that era of Shimano stuff.

Is there any respect or honor to people who go on and post "I'm willing to pay up to $x for this bike. Would it be a good buy?" And then letting them buy it, or is game to swipe it out from under them? How about if the bike bid for by others goes over $x, then you can fight?

I'm not really chastising people, because if it was my frame size, I'd maybe want it, but I'm curious as to if this has ever been brought up before. I always see people posting eBay stuff, asking if its a good deal, so I wonder how often people get it or get it stolen after giving everyone a heads up.

If someone announces their intentions to The Entire World, then there is no claim of exclusivity, IMHO.

Not really chastising, eh?

eBay is an auction; if you get outbid, your feelings shouldn't get hurt. Just overpay the next time.

Nope. I just wanted personal opinions on the matter.

If you want to be chastised: you read it your own way disregarding my statement, and your response was kind of snotty.

By the way, I don't use eBay, so I don't have repressed feelings that are boiling over. But I'll make sure that if I see you at an auction, I over pay. ;-)

It'll get 5, such Cannondales often do and it IS new . I doubt that your inseam is as small as 32"; pretending that it was, it still seams too small, it would suggest that you've a long toso. If you do or have long arms ? Only you can answer that. If you're serious, it's a good choice though I don't think it's quite " worth" more than 5 unless it really appeals to you. I like it and the components are quite nice. In any case if you DO plan to go to war bidding, you ought to go to an LBS to try to fit on and take a Cannondale for a spin. The current equivilent can be found, a 58's a better choice to at least try.
As far as bidding... it's out of your control. Try a bike out for size, get a figure in your mind, bid that max figure at the very end. It's very early on for a bike like that.
As far as all these statements regarding its condition ? I'm cofused. Actually, I'm not, others seem to be. It's quite clear that it's brand new. I've seen numerous NOS bikes lately on e-bay, some were decades older than yours.

if you want to ride something that is 15 year old technology, you've hit the mother load. I don't disagree with any of the comments about the parts and the frame, but why would you really want to ride a bike that is about 3 pounds too heavy? the shimano 600 stuff is 8 speed, everything is 10 speed now, and campy is out with 11. that fork with shock...really? I mean you might as well get a fixie and ride around with riser bars with jeans and cycling cap!

15 years from now we'll be telekinetically shifting on our 13 and 14 cog cassettes.
And replacing chains after every ride.
Does that mean current technology is good or bad?
