Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Winter training - warm spots?

I'm thinking about visiting some warmer areas for winter riding.

For those of you who live closer to the equator - SoCal, Texas, Arizona,... ect, where are some warm areas with good climbing? Is Mt Palomar rideable now and in Jan? How about Mt Lemmon in AZ?

Thanks!

The California coast is rideable year-round. Daytime temperatures are always above freezing at sea level. Mount Hamilton in San Jose (4600 foot elevation) is a popular bicycle hill climb on New Years Day. Even that elevation gets snow at most a few days every year.

In northern California, the coast is ridable but your ride might not be especially pleasant... Daytime temps are generally in the 50's, though they might go as low as the 40's or as high as the 60's. December thru March, wind and rain are a distinct possibility. On most winter rides around the SF Bay Area, I end up wearing a jacket, bib tights, base layers, and long-fingered gloves. If you want to wear shorts, a short-sleeved jersey, and feel sun on your back you may have better luck elsewhere...

Looking at 63 degrees and blue skies here in Tucson right now. Not a cloud in sight. Phenomenal "winter" riding conditions here. Lemmon usually sees snow in the winter, but it's pretty rare that it's enough to actually hamper the road travel.

Well 18 degrees F today in Denver. Not too bad on my flat spin, though I would have hated to climb today.

Looks like the Nacho is trying to keep tourism down in San Diego!

SoCal is great in winter. Az too. El Paso area of Texas and west into southern NM are generally warm with hilly terrain, but Canadian-origin cold fronts can take temps down to near-freezing or below. so be prepared. Hawaii offers the best warm hill climbing in the US in winter. If you want to ascend Mona Loa to 13,000 feet, you will need jacket and tights, you'll probably see snow, but below 5000, shorts are fine. Sometimes you get wet, but it's warm rain. You can always pack a lightweight shell and rainpants if you abhor water on your bod

Australia is great this time of year.

Here in the mountains in the State of Victoria today, it got to a lovely 23C. And it is hilly round these parts.

Central Texas has nice hills. Northern east TX does, too, but they're less high and less steep. West texas has some modest mountains, but it looks like the surface of Mars. Weather's good year-round except days like today which feature cold rain.

Carlsbad is wicked cold right now- I had to wear arm warmers AND a wind jacket at 6:00 this morning

Seriously, palomar is great all year round, as is the rest of california LA and down.

Probably not here, unless 30-50F sounds good.

Still, a lot of us can take it and ride year round... ya just need more layers.

I am from socal (Vista) but live in norcal (Humboldt)

After spending a few years up here, whenever I am home I never need anything except ss jersey and bibs.

I will be home on the roads over winter break from school and I am not even bringing my knee warmers.

Bwaaahhahaha --
You better tell him what "wicked cold" is around here.
This morning at 6:45 it was 55 up on our hill, 41 down in San Juan Capistrano.
Two hours later it was 58 on the hill, 55 in SJC. Now it's mid-60s

Seriously, coastal SoCal is just plain wonderful year 'round. In the 'dead of winter' we might see some early morning frost a few days, but it's usually followed by 50s on 'cold' days and 60s the rest of the time.

Palomar is rideable most of the time (except for the few times it gets snow); the Great Western Loop is always rideable (though a bit colder than along the coast); Newport Coast, Torrey Pines, East San Diego County... daytime paradise.
