Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone try eBay bottle cages before?

I've been looking for a pair of bottle cages. eBay has quite a few of those carbon fiber cages from Hong Kong at a decent price. If anyone's tried this, could you please provide some feedback on them. How durable are they? How well do they hold a bottle in place? Anything that stood out about the cages?

I don't get this whole carbon cage thing. I really suggest you just get some aluminum holders. Viola.

Anyways, I think your money would be better spent on alloy. Most of that Hong Kong stuff (not all) is junk. It's disgusting that half of the clothing auctionson eBay are those knockoff pro team kits from Taipei.

Nooooo! Otherwise it will be stuck to the top of page 1 forever. Let's just let them both float away naturally.

Me neither ... just leads to a debate about which ones break sooner than others.

Here's a useful response...

I've purchased said carbon cages from Asia and they are fine. Strong, light, and cheap (about $25/pair shipped). The model I purchased held the bottles in very securely. They don't have large brand name logos on them so they work. visually, with any frameset. I rate the finish on them as a B, some wavy areas on the clearcoat, especially at the mounting area (but you don't see that part when the bottle is in place). If they don't work out for you, sell them on craigslist. Someone will buy them from you, guaranteed.

If you are going carbon for bottle cages, never pay big $$ for the name brands. It's a huge rip-off.

I got my cages off ebay. Work great. Of course, they're Tacx Tao, not carbon.

I got a pair off ebay.
I am so much faster without all the weight of a metal cage.

Seriously, though they work good and look cool. I have not had any problems.

But +1 to just getting aluminum cages. The weight difference is about the weight of a fart and when you cheap out, you risk ejecting your bottles.

Thanks so much for that! I was hoping they'd restock (my lbs charges 25$ for the same exact cage , guess they really do make a lot of their money from accessory mark ups!). Now I have matching cages , and a free bottle.

I have the carbon cages from ebay and have been using them for over a year. And have yet to have a problem with them, they still hold the bottle in very nice and I am not even genital with them when I put the bottle back in them while riding.

I really don't understand people who complain about carbon cages. The things job is for a water bottle to sit in it. It doesn't need to have bombproof construction. I have never seen a broken carbon cage. You can get carbon for as cheap as alloy in many cases as well.

That's just it. I have never seen a broken carbon cage either, but I have seen more bottles ejected from cheap, no name cages than all other cages combined. The problem isn't the material, it's the construction. If you want carbon, pay for the quality stuff.

Aluminum cages look silly on a CF bike. I do have them on my mountain bike tho!

I can't say what is good or bad on ebay as far as CF cages go, but can testify that Sette's cages do a fantastic job of keeping the bottle where it should:

https://www.pricepoint.com/detail/193...ottle-Cage.htm

Not cheap at $25/ea tho. I've HEARD decent things, but haven't tried these $3.98 cages (at least they're no aluminum!):

https://www.pricepoint.com/detail/111...ottle-Cage.htm

HHmmm, found these at $9.98/ea ... they actually might not look too bad on a CF frame...

This is quite tempting. Pretty light, and comes with bottles. I think I'll just get these.

I dunno what the ebay ones cost or weigh, but I saw a Bell cf cage at Walmart the other day. $20 and 28g. I didn't buy one 'cause I'm not a carbon guy, but at least you'd could see it for yourself. This guy:

https://www.bikerumor.com/2009/08/26/...9-at-wal-mart/

posted a pic you.
