The only way this thread could be better is if it was Tom* himself who posted this, bragging about his lightweight nut-skewer.

No worries. Copperas Cove is going to kill him and his bike, and then Trek can deny warranty coverage because his heir will not be the original owner.

I feel sorry for the seatmast, not Tom. Tom will get his come-uppence, but the seatmast?
Some guy just drilled it out and guess where it's going when it dies? Thats right. Somewhere It was never designed to go.
Poor seatmast.

Stem by Pino Maronni. A few of those were in use in my racing days. He would come to the big races with his threaded hub flange titanium wheels. Way ahead of his time and a master machinist.

Reminds me of the guy who drilled a bunch of "ventilation" holes in his hard hat.

Eddy Merckx didn't have to do that to set the one hour record on this bike. What's wrong with this guy? I'm reminded of the movie "Pi" where a drill is used to relieve a chronic headache.

Blast from the Past
edit: not to hijack the thread but I saw a reference to Pino above. Very cool dude, he used to hang around the MI racing scene quite a bit. But you didn't want him to get you cornered if you had to be somewhere, he would talk your ear off

Hahhaha I think he could save more weight by cutting his hair.
Not to mention that blindly drilling holes into key structural pieces is probably not the best idea...

Meh, I wouldn't do that to a carbon post that one sits on... I'm sure he considered his options, since he has some top of the line WW stuff. It's not like he can go out and buy a lighter post/semi-integrated post thing. A local guy sanded down his Arione carbon rails, I think 2yrs ago. He still rides it. I'm not sure how this compares w/AX Lightness seat; the Fizik rails are really tall and burly.

is it true? does the whole bike including saddle and wheels only 11 lbs?
why isn't 11 lbs light enough?
how much does Lance's bike weight?

The LBS said it's true. I haven't seen it with my own eyes though. He's still riding it as far as I know, despite some ribbing from the locals.

There's a guy blogging on the WW forum right now who sanded the paint off his Look and managed to save slightly over 100 grams. I've gotta believe that's more than Tom* saved with his makeshift ocarina.
