Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Upgrading my Shifters....Thoughts?

Currently running Shimano 105 8 speed STI. I have Ultegra 6600 Brakes and Derailleurs. I know that I will need a new crank, chain and cassette in addition to the new shifters.

I am trying to decide between 9 and 10 speed. 105 vs Ultegra. I don't race. I ride a lot of long distances and ride primarily on the hoods.

what do you guys think?

p.s. I know this is TMI but the 6700 shifters make me wet.

10 spd ultegra if you can afford it. PBK is selling the whole group for around $600. If that is to much get 10 spd 105. I would get a full 10 spd ultegra from PBK and sell your complete group.

My shifters are really old. Mid 90's? so that puts them at about 15 years old. They function OK. but the rubber is far past its prime and i just don't find them that comfortable or think that they shift that great anymore.

you deserve an upgrade. i agree with Jynx, best move is to sell your old stuff and buy a full new groupset, you wont regret it. if the 6700 stuff is what your panties are dripping for, save up and do it!

Do you really really like your current bike except for the shift levers? If you think your current shift levers are worn out, I would just replace them with new 8-speed shift levers. Upgrading to 9 or 10 speed is a lot of money for a small functional improvement. If you want to spend more money, think about selling your old bike and buying a new one. Depending on what how much your old bike is worth, buying a new one may be more cost effective than upgrading the old one.

Go 10-speed.

9-speed is becoming rapidly deprecated and spare parts will only get harder to source. Especially 9s STI.

I do indeed love my current ride. Its a 2001 Lemond Buenos Aires Reynolds 853 Steel Frame with a Kinesis 2 carbon fork. Mavic Aksiums running GP 4000s tires.

The main reason I'm looking for new shifters is because i want crisp new performance and comfort. The current options for new 8 speed are pretty horrific. Sora or Tiagra? *gag*

So it seems that $300 for new Ultegra Shifters on Ebay is reasonable...Figure $60 for chain/cassette...$80 for Crankset and $50 for Bottom Bracket. thats almost $500 or I can put up another 100$ for some extra Derailleurs and Brakes.

Or at this point should i be looking at some nice 105 Shifters?

Epicus07,

The new Tiagra is pretty nice stuff. It is 9 speed but shifts very nice and acts just like the 6600 Ultegra. I have both and either works like it should with lots of miles on each.

Look, I can't comment on upgrading from 8 speed to 10 speed because I've not made that change, but I did move from 8 speed Ultegra to 9 speed 105 and did NOT change the derailers or cranks/chainrings. I've had zero shifting problems. I like 105, but Ultegra is nicer.
