Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Check www.cambriabike.com I believe they have an inexpensive Open Sport rim that should be pretty solid although heavy. Otherwise, they also have the Velocity Fusion and Dee V, which are both very durable rims. Cambria Bike is also my favorite source for spokes.

Pardon me if I repeat myself: 32h Mavic CXP-33 or Open Pros on Ultegra hubs. For training, also for racing i.e. if you don't win, it won't be due to the wheels.

However, CXP-33 is also indeed a good, sturdy rim.

Prowheelbuilder.com.

Call them and see what they have in stock.

Go Velocity Deep-V or Mavic CXP-33.

Open Sports are good rims for the money. My first build was with those and they were only $35 each from the LBS. A little more money can get you Velocity Aeroheads, Fusions, or the boat anchor Deep V's. You could also consider Kinlin's XR200/270/300 - which are affordable, strong and light for a given depth.

Cambria Bike is great for spokes, but I've been turning to wheelbuilder.com lately as they have a better inventory for the lengths I need. I usually call before ordering just to make sure they have the correct number in stock.

Thanks for the links. The hub in question:

(don't mind the spacers being in the wrong spots, I've been cleaning it)

Don't most bikes come with 32-hole beater rims? Mine did. Hey, wanna trade?

That hub has some deep marks from the previous build, so I recommend making sure to lace it up with the spokes going in the same direction when you build it.

Did they just change the name or did they make the Open Sports suck less than the MA-3?

The profile looks slightly different, and the OS seems to have a wear indicator. What was wrong with the MA3, other than the weight?

They were notorious for cracking around the eyelets. Happened to me and googling will get you other complaints as well. It soured me on anything single-eyeleted from Mavic.

Salsa Delgado. A little wider than a standard rim at 22.5mm. HED has started to build their rims wider for better ride and cornering. This is a low buck alternative that's tough and cheap.

I thought all Mavic rims are notorious for that.

I'm very happy with my DT 1.1 rims, they have taken a severe beating and are still going strong. They've been over highway rumble strips at 40mph, over roads with cracks so bad they caused lost waterbottles and computers, over very nasty potholed roads, down bumpy dirt roads and I haven't had a single problem with them

People need to stop recommending open pros or aeroheads. They're garbage. Their are much stronger rims for much cheaper out there.

That's the plan. Still not bad for something I found in the trash

Do you really mean that or is this some kind of troll? I own both of those particular models and they've both held up very well. Just what exactly do you think is stronger at that same kind of weight?
