Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano shifters and derailleur cross-level compatibility

Hi, I'm new to road cycles and their components (been puffing around on a MTB for a few years). I just bought a road bike with Shimano 2203 8 speed shifters, and I was wondering if I would have any compatibility issues by upgrading to an Ultegra8/9/10 speed rear derailleur .

On a similar note, I was wondering if component levels (Sora, Tiagra, 105, Ultegra, Dura Ace) are compatible with each other as long as the cogs/speeds match (unless specifically stated otherwise in the specs)? That is, can I use an Ultegra 10sp shifter with a Sora 10sp cassette and a 105 10sp derailleur ?

How about SRAM and Campagnolo?

Thanks.

you're putting lipstick on a pig if you're using an ultegra RD with 2200 shifters...

yes it will work though. as far as compatibility, 9 speed sora will work with 9 speed tiagra, all the 10 speed stuff gels pretty well (with some exceptions once you get to DA 7900/Ultegra 6700)... there's no such thing as a sora 10 sp cassette though.

SRAM cassettes/cranks/chains/FD will work with shimano, but shifters and RD have to be paired.

campy's on it's own

Ah, thanks for taking to the time to respond. That's excellent information, and encouraging as well. I was a little intimidated by the volume of choices for components and their level of quality.

The idea with the Ultegra RD was to get one while it was on sale, and wait for an Ultegra shifter to go on sale someday. I can't spring for Ultegra shifters just now.

My bike came factory equipped with Ulttegra deraillieurs and 105 shifters; it works superbly.
