ZOMG! Crack in my carbon chain stay. Need a new frame. Tips!?
Long time no post. No news is good news.
There's a nice big gouge / crack in my carbon chainstay and the bike makes a lovely creaking when I ride it. I thought rather than die in an explosion, I should buy a new frame. Or should I buy a new bike? The components are pretty old and worn now (2005 105)
I'm kind of nervous to buy another bike with carbon fiber stays because if this happens again, it would be a huge pain in the ass.
My question is this:
Are there any manufacturers that do factory-made aluminum bikes with great components (Ultegra or higher)?
Or can I source a great aluminum frame myself, a new groupset and keep my existing wheels/accessories for relatively the same price?
Any thoughts? I've been out of the gear loop for about 2 years now. Oh yeah, and what's hot now, Shimano or SRAM?

Why not just send it to Calfee and get it fixed?

$3K with Dura Ace. You'll be the envy of every budget racer in America... or at least me.
About half the price and just as capable with SRAM Rival is the CAAD9 4.

Another possibility. Not sure if there are any reviews out on it, since it's a newish frame. Worth a look perhaps. =)
But that CAAD9 1 looks pretty good also. =)

hmm I was thinking of getting SRAM Rival but now because of the guy in this thread whose forum name is DuraAce, I am considering spending twice as much... decisions, decisions.

I've been a Shimano Dura-Ace lover for a long time.... until I tried the SRAM Red. It's really nice and I love how crisp the shifts are (especially the upshifts). Dura-Ace 7900 works well, especially with an FSA K-Force Light crankset. For some reason, the front derailleur shifts so much better with a 52/38 than it does with the 7900 53/39.
