Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

At 220 my regular routine was

135lbs 10 reps
155 8 reps
220 6 reps
275 4 reps
315 2 reps
300 1 rep
220 6 reps
then to finish off 135 lbs for 15 reps 2 sets.

Then 3 sets 10, inclined benchpress with 200 lbs

Pyramid up and down. I might have been able to do more but I worked out alone without a spotter so I never attempted more than 330 for safety reasons.

Bench: 275 at 155 lbs. 305 at 178 lbs. 10 years later, a failed bodybuilding career, and persisting bilateral shoulder impingment/bicep tendonitis...one half-press of 35 lbs (maybe).
One-arm bicep: 45 lbs for reps on the preacher bench (the deep burn is good!). Now--one pink rubberized 5 lb dumbell, standing, 10 reps x 3 (part of shoulder rehab).

On the bright side, my cycling jerseys fit fairly well now.

that's me, without the track racing. But I want to take up track

Just got back from the gym - 125 lbs 5x4 reps incline press, @ 175 lbs body weight.

IT band syndrome/tendonitis has reduced my leg workouts to... jogging 1mi around the track. : (

10 years ago it was 335 for a couple of reps on heavy days. Now, after some rehab from biceps tendonitis, I stick with pushups, pullups, and very light high-rep dumbells and cables for rotator cuff strength. Jerseys are still tight in the arms though. It's amazing what these light weights together with cycling can do.

3 sets of 10 @ 135 lbs, then another 3 sets of 10 @ 145 lbs last night.

I weigh about 175 lbs.

You know, I should just come down there and kick all your Fred asses right now.

I can't really load up the bench press with more weight, adding upper body bulk doesn't do much for my cycling. Hell, nothing does much for my cycling anyway.

I like to wear a small mirror attached to my hat so I don't bump into people who are busy grunting and yelling at the weights while working out.

Thanks for dragging up a painful repressed memory. In 6th grade we had to do the bench press for a physical test or something. I couldn't even get the bar up and everyone laughed at me.

Back when I used to lift a lot in my early to mid twenties, I could bench a decent amount. At 6' 5" and 199 lbs I hit 330 lbs. max. I could also rep 225 x 15, 295 x 5, 315 x 4. Those are all PR's that I don't think I'll ever break again. I'm 30 years old now and I have a compressed L1 disc and vertebrae so I keep it light at the gym now. I can still hit 225 x 5, but I usually stick with 185 for sets of 10, feet up on the bench for more isolation and it puts less stress on my lower back.

Pictures please, with these boasts!! I'm no Pcad or Botto, but benched 475 two years ago before getting into cycling. Which I could reverse my legs and arms now!!

8 x 265 on decline press and I weigh 170. Just couldn't get weight plus 100. on flat bench I could get 5 x 225. Right now i probably could do 170 but I would die to get it up. LOTS of light load high rep stuff now that I got into bicycles.

These days I'm weighing 140 and would probably be challenged to get 225 :-/.
In my peak strength days (college, 15 years ago?), I was weighing in at 136 lb and actually benched 275. I continued to lift and get stronger after this point, before burning out, and further increased my bench strength. My estimate of what I would have maxed at is about 295lbs based on how many reps I could do at certain weights during my workouts (for examples 'x' # of reps at 255 during a workout, etc).

Today I can still easily do sets of 10 at 135lbs (my bodyweight is about 132), and could probably still put up 185lbs for a single. If I wanted to, I could probably get back up to 225 in about 2 months time without much trouble. About 6 years ago (pre-cycling) I got back into powerlifting / bodybuilding and got my bench back up to 265, but I was also focusing on putting on size (got up to 152 lbs) so I know my body will 'remember' once I strengthed all the secondary muscles. I just don't have the desire anymore and only wish to lift to train for cycling now.

Yes, it was all natural also (only protein shakes and a lot of determination).

may I observe:

-- several guys are posting impressive statistics, followed by injury reports. How many of these injuries are due to repetitive-stress weightlifting?
-- how many people were lifting weights in order to improve athletic performance back in the college days? I began lifting weights in high school to improve athletic performance, but once in college I only lifted weights to improve my chances of getting chicks.

I'm at 200lbs now and don't see myself as a typical cyclist. I usually bench on my heavy work days up to 345 for 3 reps.

I currently use 135 lbs in my 5x5 program. that's 5 sets of reps. I mix it in with other stuff like wide grip pullups; curls etc. by the end of the session I've done at least 25 of everything. my session runs just under 60 minutes. I turned 50 last April

When I was in the USMC (many years ago) I entered a Navy bodybuilding comp. I figured I'd win the sub 150 class. I could put up 285 - and figured I'd do 305 for the comp. When I got there, the first guy got on the bench, weighing 145, and put up 315 with ease. I went home.

When I was 24, I benched 300lbs at 173, 5'11" which is my personal best. It's important to include your height though, 145 lbs say at 5'3" is very different from 145lbs at 6'. This summer I was benching 260lbs at 180.

I've lifted for 35 years, powerlifted for about 15. My shoulders are in very bad shape. I can't raise my arms above my head. Bench pressing is hard on shoulders.

Good one. I'd like to see the weight set that has those odd numbered plates. 46.5 lb. plates? lol Unless you guys are currently putting up those numbers now, they are completely moot. I quit worrying about my max bench shortly after high school.... I do keep track of consecutive push ups though. No, not the ones that 95% of people call a push up and would have a DI repeating the same number over and over until you did it right.
