Stainless steel is relatively low maintenance. Shimano works fine for me. I have Jagwire on my bike right now, although the cable routing ferrules are weird.

Buddy of mine (SRAM mechanic) swears by it.
EDIT: I'm talking about the brand spanking new sealed stuff.

I have tried Gore and I've tried Aztec, but was disappointed with both of them.
I have gone back to Shimano Dura Ace. They last at least as long as the more expensive cables, they glide nice and smooth, they are far easier to install, and they are even more maintenance-free than the Gores.

Shimano shifter housing is pretty good.

I like the Jagwire sets. They're inexpensive, work well, and they give you everything you need. And they're available in fancy colors if you're into that sort of thing.

Shimano dura ace or shimano sis from your lbs. No need to go crazy w/ cables if your not running crazy cable routing (ie sram or newer shimano groups)

I just picked a set of Dura Ace to replace my original Jagwire cables with
~3000 miles / 1 year on them. Figured it's cheap piece of mind at $30.
Edit: hey, my 100'th post, WooHoo!

I run standard Shimano cables and housing except for my rear brake cable. It's a coated teflon (black) because it runs alongside the top tube and is exposed to the copious amounts of sweat that pours off my body. Stainless steel looks like crap after a month.

My cables probably could last that long, but considering how cheap and good shimano ones are, I generally swap them out twice a year. I'm actually going to throw all new cables on in a few weeks.

I am in Singapore. I can find jagwire easily but can't find the Gore. Which jagwire is good? Saw many different models and what is the difference?
