Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Rides/Exercise - January 15/16/17

What did your weekend exercise consist of? Did you get outside for a ride? Did you ride your trainer or rollers? Did you go to the gym?

Rowan and I did a casual 50 km cruise to Marysville, Buxton, and back on a hot, sunny afternoon. For a casual cruise, it was a lot more work than I was hoping it would be. I'm experiencing some frustration with the process of building back up to where I once was. In my head, I should be able to knock off 50 km ... 100 km ... 160 km ......... with no trouble at all. But physically I'm struggling.

Then Rowan shoveled dirt for our new verandah floor ... and I helped by shovelling a few wheelbarrows full of dirt too. I figured it was either that or doing some weightlifting.

Heading out in a bit for maybe 30-40 miles. Haven't decided where I want to go, I might just not decide till I get out there.

Today was a "honey do" day but I hope to get a couple of hours in tomorrow before the skies open up. A week's worth of rain is forecast. We need it here in Southern California but it'll wreck havoc with riding and when it comes down in that quantity more will run off than soak in.
Nice pix, pretty country.

I rode 23 miles through the water, grit and salt. My first ride since the day after Christmas and it felt great. Hoping tomorrow is more of the same. The bike's all cleaned up, so I'm more than ready.

57 mile club ride for me today, and we had about 30 riders. It was about 38 degrees when we started, and in the low 50's when we finished. Tomorrow its the swimming pool since its going to be raining. But I like swimming too... a lot.

42 miles with the wife Gina. OK, so I like this AC/DC song a whole lot but I need fast footage to apply it to a video. I somehow talk Gina and BoyLd into doing intervals so that I can get some good footage hahaha! Hey, they did it and I didn't twist any arms hahaha! I'm thinking they will both be sleeping like babies tonight! Gina and BoyLd were pumping pretty good, 21-23 mph. Gina is dead tired but I got my video bwahahaha!

62 km yesterday, 68 km today. Lots more people out riding than there used to be 2-3 years ago. Ran into a couple who showed me how to get to a hill I didn't know about. Didn't have the fitness to ride up it with them just yet, unfortunately. On the way back in, I was surprised to see a group of tandem riders. I was under the impression that because of a law forbade two people to ride on a single bicycle, tandems were technically illegal in Japan. Maybe they finally updated the law to allow them.

I've been a lazy sot all weekend. Didn't do anything Friday or Saturday. Tonight I'll do Spinervals 31.0 - Endurance Booster. It's a 1.75 hour aerobic zone 3 workout.

40km ride before lunch, 8km with my wife and kids after lunch, then 20km in the late afternoon. It was a balmy 7C today, warmest day of the year so far, and soooo nice after 2 weeks of snow.

Did 45 miles along the Oregon coast yesterday. The ride was not as nice as normal. I didn't mind the rain and cool temps, but the shoulder had so much debris on it because of a recent storm that much of it was unrideable. A film of moss made the clear sections slick and a bit treacherous on descents. Even that wouldn't have bugged me except it was foggy and riding in the traffic lane on a highway where people can't even see you lit up requires significant extra attention (plus I couldn't enjoy the scenery myself)

My regular 1 hour spin class on Saturday morning, and a two-hour base miles spin class this morning. Did some strength training both days before class. I've got a three-day weekend, so I'll probably head down to the gym to get in some non-cycling cardio (probably on the rower) tomorrow.

Eat your hearts out Californians and other warm-weather types! The bitter cold spell finally broke. Got out for approx 37 miles. Conditioning is not what it was, but the rollers have helped me stay somewhat in shape.

I don't actually tend to go on exercise rides. My bike is my only form of transportation so anytime I leave the house I work a little bit of exercise in.

Friday - Weights–shoulders and tris.
Saturday - Enjoyed a 22 mile up-tempo evening ride with son.
Sunday - TBD. Rollers maybe since I'm watching NFL playoffs and SoCal forecast calls for late rain.
Monday (MLK holiday) - Weights (chest and biceps) and rollers
