Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Blackburn Frame Pump Review

Hey. I bought the blackburn full frame pump a few months ago and have had to use it enough times where I feel I can give an adequate review. The pump gets a 2 on a 1 - 10 scale. It sucks. Don't get one. Maybe I just got a defective one but every time I use it I can't even get the pressure over 60 and this after a lot of pumping. I am now in the market for a new full sized frame pump so if anyone has any suggestions please shoot them my way.

I recently purchased a Nashbar Stage 2 Mini, and when they say mini, they mean mini. It has a capacity of 120 psi, and it fits in my jersey pocket, sideways. It also come with a frame mount. The only drawback is that it takes a bit longer to get to your desired psi because of the small barrel, but for $10, I'll pump a while longer to continue the ride.

I own two aluminum barrel, and one carbon barrel, blackburn frame pumps, that are all about five years old. I don't use them anymore. I agree with your review.

I have a Blackburn CF frame pump and it seems to work OK enough except for the fold out T handle that can pinch your hand while you are pumping at higher pressures where you will have a bit of resistance. The pump also seems to require more effort too get tires to full pressure.
Frankly, I never encountered a better frame pump than the Zefal HP2 that I bought way back in the 80's! Only got the Blackburn cause I misplaced the trusty ole Zefal a year ago.

Topeak Road Morph. I'm also interested in Lezyne's equivalent (forget the name), which looks pretty nice.

Does it feel like air is leaking out instead of going into the tire ?

Sometimes the plunger doesn't get a good seal. Take it apart and dribble 4-5 drops of oil in the barrel. Rotate the plunger to spread it around, then give the pump another try.

I had a frame pump I bought in 1992. I won't mention the brand because they probably don't make them anymore. It was called a "Mountain Pump" and had a rather large diameter tube.

I'm prone to tendonitis. Trying to pump my road tires close to 100 psi was an ordeal that hurt my hands, gradually getting to the point of tendonitis. A friend let me use his Zefal HpX. It was like night and day! I bought one for all my bikes and that became my default pump until I tried the Topeak Road Morph. I think it's slightly better.

The same issue affects floor pumps. The larger diameter barrels are harder to pump. Better off with a "lower gear" smaller diameter barrel and more reps. I had a Joe Blow "Max" floor pump with the same problem. Could not get past 100 psi even with my full body weight (170 lbs) on the plunger.

My Planet Bike Roadie frame pump was a good pump until I stepped on it and bent it. I replaced it with a Topeak model that gets 100+ psi.

If you buy another pump, ask the person at the shop if you can try it on one of their bikes.

This reminds me to pick up a full size pump. I have two Blackburns AirStiks (? I think) too, carbon + grey, and although they'll get me home, they aren't ideal. I did assemble my bike with a folding tool and pump up the tires with a Blackburn thing when I got to my SoCal training base before anyone who lived there. I'd much prefer a full length frame pump.

I guess I'll experiment with various full size pump placement strategies etc. I'm thinking rear QR to seat rail area or front QR to stem area, both with some kind of system to keep the pump from flying off.

Hmmm, I have two Blackburns, one CF finish and one silver alum finish. Both work great and have for the 4 years I've pwned them. Not only on my bikes but the several riders with CO2 and smaller compact BIG AIR type pumps that have asked to use it. I have no problem getting 110 -120.

IMO, depends on the operator. While pumping, I crouch with feet a bit wider than shoulder width. Front elbow on front knee using as support. Never had a problem.

I've seen others hold the pump with one hand on the bottom and one on the pump handle no support! How in the .....?
