Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Small rip in fizik saddle...

So I got my fizik arione saddle sometime early last summer (estimate about 3000-3500 miles on it) and the nose has developed a tear. The bike has only been in 1 minor crash w/ the saddle (saddle did not hit the ground) and from what I can tell the team is simply from my thighs.

What bugs me is that this saddle is very new, and I can only imagine this tear growing. Is this typical? Or should I write to/call fizik? I can take a picture if you need want, but the outer covering is torn and the padding and plastic base is visible in a 1-1.5" strip in the nose.

Anyone else had this issue with fizik saddles?

I laid my new Fizik Antares up against and concrete wall at the beach and the leather rubbed through. Saddle has about 500 miles on it now and I'm pissed, but what can you do? I guess that's what you get with a minimalistic saddle.

Hard to guess what caused it without seeing a picture.

I have an old (at least 4 years) Arione on my commuter bike and it has held up very well for me.

I did a quick Ctrl + F here and couldn't find the word "tear". Maybe someone here has a horror story for you.

I'll try taking a photo tomorrow and post it, but I can't think of how it would of occurred besides just my thighs. When stored, nothing rubs the seat...

Its not uncommon for a leather saddle to wear through. I doubt they will warranty it since it is normal wear and tear. Put a piece of cloth tape of the tear to slow it down

I've had good results sending emails directly with photos to manufactures with problems that I thought were not right and to my surprise most have corrected it directly by sending me replacements.
Worth a try you have nothing to loose

It's not uncommon with fizik. They use a very thin covering on top; people love the soft feel of fizik saddles and that's what helps makes them comfortable. It's a trade off, but I would be pissed about a 1" tear. Give 'em a call.

it has happened with every single fizik i have owned. I just buy used ones from people who have torn/ripped it at a deep discount. Doesn't effect ride quality at all. I don't really care.
I have heard of people using a glue gun. I just line it with hockey tape.

No matter how careful you are, it happens with them.

Repair it. Tubular tire glue (or "fast tack" contact cement from the hardware store) works well if the cover is just separated from the shell. Otherwise, needle and thread if the cover is actually ripped.

Stuff breaks and wears out. If you can repair it, it'll save you a lot of money and hassle.

So I'm going to try and email them. If I get no luck w/ that, I will stitch it or super glue it. Thanks everyone.

I run a Selle San Marco Regal Ti right now and was thinking of trying a Fizik Antares on the Madone I plan on buying this spring. Not so sure now after hearing all of these complaints of easy tearing. I wonder if me being a clyde would speed up the tearing effect? I have been pretty darn happy with my Regal so far and even ran it on my Fisher Rig SS this summer.

Here is the photo. You can see how my thigh has chaffed right through the material. Kind of disappointed. But I love the way the saddle feels, so I guess I"ll just have to live.

Mine did that too. The shell has a sharp edge combined with the rubbing of your thigh, wears though

Just put some tape on it to stop the tear, as it has spread considerably just in the past few days. Also emailed fizik. My next saddle may be a selle italia slr.

Small as in short? It is definitely a smaller sized bike, but the reason the saddle is slammed on the rails is because the seat tube angle is very steep compared to most other bikes (76º as opposed to 74.5º on a CAAD9). I need a seatpost w/ more setback, but this works for now.

Never received a response from fizik and the tape is not working, my legs just rub it off. Sent them another email, hopefully I get a response.
