Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If one wanted to get started with power training ...

... how much would one be needing to spend? Obviously, I know very little about this.

There is a good Competitive Cyclist Powertap deal going on right now.

The best value going on right now.

Buy the book first. If you can't finish reading it, then don't bother with the PM. You'd just be using it as a very expensive bike computer. There's nothing wrong with that- some people just aren't analytical enough about riding to geek out over power charts. Its better to discover that before you spend the money than after.

Read up on the "power 411" stuff, which a lot of the same info as the book.

The book is good no doubt, but I personally wouldn't buy it until I had a power data to play with.

+1 on the get-a-coach bits. Helps to order your training.

I'd check with Psimet before buying from CC. They have a decent deal, but I bought a Pro+ wireless wheel from Rob for not a whole lot more money...

Edit: though I didn't buy the PT computer, since I already have an Edge 705.

I would get the book before spending more. If you aren't the type to download the info from your rides, and spend some time analyzing the data then save your money.

You could also read through the google group:

https://groups.google.com/group/wattage

A lot of the questions there are very technical, but still it gives you some ideas on training.

The nice thing about Powertap is that if you buy, then decide you don't want to be bothered there is a good market for used models and you can get a lot of your money back.

Spend $15 and read and study the book.

It would be interesting to know the percentage of people that buy powermeters and then aren't willing to do what it take to use it properly. I bet it is 50% (if not higher).
