Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

question to umd

Distance: 62.954 mi
Elevation Gain: 4006 ft
Elevation Loss: 3997 ft

Min Max Avg
Power: 0 929 179 watts
Speed: 3.2 50.3 23.1 mph

When I go with the same speed on flats my avg power is around 260 watts. At 180 lbs I'm probably heavier then you but on flats it should not matter much. How do you manage to spend so little power. Very curious.

ok for a more serious answer there are just too many variables for you to compare your numbers to him. That is average power on an almost 3 hour ride. He lives in a pretty hilly area so I am sure there was a lot of descending at high speeds with 0 power. I understand there is also a lot of climbing done for longer durations but he is also much lighter than you. I think around 150 lbs. Not sure because I don't stalk him that much.

I saw the thread where this data was posted and I'm pretty sure he said something regarding wishing he was the one pushing the pace. Power requirement for a given speed is reduced significantly by drafting; especially at higher speeds.

No, I don't stalk umd. I just occasionally have a good memory and even happen to remember this was in ls01(?)'s apology thread to umd.

umd also has a very aero position. I can usually pick him out in a pack just by the height of his head.

If you are talking about the numbers I posted yesterday, that was a race.

However, I am much less than 180. If the scale says 150 I tell kuf I feel fat and she gives me evil looks.

Weight makes a huge difference climbing but it does also make a difference indirectly because your coefficient of aerodynamic drag is affected by your frontal area which is a function of your weight.

And also your position. I ride a size down, with a special short headtube, with a -17 stem and no spacers. I have about 12cm of drop, bend my elbows and have a nearly flat back on the hoods.

Here is an example from October. This was a (low key) time trial, and it was lightly raining so I didn't break out the aero wheels.

Which brings me to equipment. Being that this was a race, I was using my 46mm carbon tubulars.

I don't care what some moron on an internet forum thinks. I like them, my wife likes them, and it makes me recognizable at rides and races. They stay and you can stfu.

Yeah it was a little hilly. Mostly long false flats but a short punchy climb a few times.

I was about to say this sounds like flirting, then I looked over and saw the avatar.

I'm assuming Frameless is just a bored individual having some fun.

I do not race and going to ask stupid question. With avg speed this high and such a relatively low power, is drafting responsible for it? I was once riding with my friend and pushing 350 watts, that tired me pretty fast and i decided to try drafting. The power immediately fell down to low 200s while keeping the same speed.

Yes, drafting. But the mind-blowing part you may see if you compare the speed and power between the two races. Same course, same basic conditions, a few hours apart.

Actually it is very interesting indeed assuming there was no change in wind conditions
