Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

LOL. I needed a good laugh. My nephew has said basically the same thing before. He told the dog that he was higher on the food chain and that if he continued the foolishness he would have to bite him. It worked that time.

To the OP, a good squirt of water does seem to work better than you would think it should. I have a semi-friendly contest with a neighbor's Border Collie. He is fast and can sometimes win. I have had to squirt him a couple of times in order to get away.

Ha.. just know that when he accidentally takes you out that you invited him to play and encouraged it.

your nephew probably gave the body language of someone who was in control and that is all that is needed. I've dealt with all kinds of dogs that many folks are afraid of and have never had a real issue. I had my cousin's rotty give me a warning once.. then it came crawling back feeling sorry. Being scared enough to carry weapons is just asking for more aggression not less.

I really can feel your pain. I live in a very rural area, and big ass farm dogs are the norm down too many roads. Worse yet, that a good portion of the local roads turn to dirt, so I have to turn around and race the dog again on the way out.
I have strongly been considering getting some pepper spray.

They hate this, and it fits in a bottle cage nicely. And with any luck they will make it home so the owner will get enough on him to die too.

Much better range than pepper spray, and cheaper too.

You can read most dogs, many just want to play. But some want to eat your arse.

This is small enough to fit into a Bento bag or jersey pocket:

A loose dog means a bad owner. Period.

ruger LCP is on my short list right now. at only 11 ounces fully loaded (9.4 unloaded) it is super light weight.

WHOOOSSHHH, this place would be a little duller without you

A little saner perhaps but definitely a little duller!

I just bought one at a gun show for $289. It's feels much nicer in the hand than the Kel Tec. Now if only .380 ammo would come down in price...

You my good sir are a jack a$$. the immediate post above yours tells of the exact reason I would like a repellent. I have been bitten, it wasn't that bad. I don't want to taco my rim. We come from the place of logic and responsibility, something you obviously know nothing of.

Pepper spray is the best for dogs... esp since you'll always be upwind if they're chasing you...

To the pistol advocates, start smaller with a BB or pellet gun maybe u don't have to kill the dog to get away.

I'm pretty sure this would work against dogs if you so much as bounce it off the road in front of them, since it would get in their nose... I don't think hitting a moving target from a bike with it would be all that hard... if you get it anywhere on their face it will do it's job. Plus, it would probably bit in a bottle cage...lol

Border Collie's aren't very intimidating, so when one gave chase recently, I decided to make a race out of it. Those things are surprisingly fast!

Dogs are known to stay away from the scent of human urine. Piss all over yourself and see for yourself.

If it doesn't work, please let us know. We're always in for a laugh.

Here's a trick I learned on BF a while back. If you notice a dog ahead who looks like he wants to chase, slow down until the dog is maybe 5 feet ahead of you, then put on a quick burst of speed. They tend to get faked out, which stops them from running out in front of you. I think you're more likely to get injured if they accidentally cross your path than from a dog actually wanting to take you down. The fast ones will catch back up, but they won't be in a good position to bite you or get in your way.

That's been my strategy for years. It works if the dog is coming from the side. Nature hard wires their brain to lead you, like a football defender taking an angle. You can fool this pretty easily with a couple of well timed speed changes.. I've left a lot of dogs standing beside the road looking dumbfounded. Doesn't work in an ambush though.

Just so you know, shooting any animal with a pellet (or paintball for that matter), and not killing it, is considered animal cruelty. Not that I particularly agree, but you can get charged for it. So, if you are going to shoot something, have good reason, and kill it.

For chrissakes. What's with all this animal psychology? We're humans, goddamnit! Just destroy his habitat, see him driven before you, and hear the lamentation of his *****es. Man wins again.

Even a "playful" dog might be stupid enough to stop in front of your front tire and put you in the hospital. Bike + Dog = BAD.

Just ride with someone slower than you. A friend of mine carries a pellet gun. It is funny when he shoots a dog. Yelling NO and sprinting has worked for me so far.
