Best Mid-Size SUV for Bike Hauling

I pedal in my sleep...
i've had very solid reliability out of my vw's too (knocks on wood), some of that i attribute to brand quality, but as i mentioned, i also attribute the reliability to my OCD maintenance rituals. i do all the work on the cars myself, and i use the best fluids, filters, and components i can buy. i would not hesitate to buy another VW, but i dont think they are for the type of person who brings their car to the dealer for everything (especially out of warranty)
What's with you VW owners, don't you know putting a bike in the back is not allowed? Roof rack or you're a sinner!

At what mileage is a car considered very relaible and you get your money's worth? My 98 BMW is at 138K now and it still drives like the first day I bought it (used, 105K earlier.) I always use that as a contra point for those who question european car's reliability. I do my own maintenance on it ever since a dealer charged me twice the money for half the amount of oil for an oil change.
Forget Saab. Lost cause. VW may have a prayer. At least they're friggin solvent.

Love it! I think it would be a pain to drive and park though. I think the C Class RVs are a good compromise. Small enough to drive & park in most lots, and big enough for a queen or full size bed. (The floor plan in the pic I found doesn't have a queen bed though.)
Anybody need their taxes done?

My 2007 Acura RDX is smaller, but I can fit two bikes in the back without taking the wheels off (I've done it a couple of times). I love the car. Plus it drives like a BMW jacked up 6". Paddle shifters. It's fun. It's comfortable. It hauls all my stuff. It is unstoppable in the snow.

The Insight is a piece of crap next to the Prius, I drove them both. And technologically, it's 5+ years behind the Prius. I was really very disappointed by the Insight. I drove a couple of Honda Civics (late model) and the car struck me as an uncomfortable go-kart. The new Prius felt like a fuel sipping Lexus.

I only brought up Lexus because that's how much nicer the Prius was than the Insight. Night and day. Insight felt cheap, ride was rough, car was disappointing. Prius had a far more elegant interior, refined ride, drive, control surfaces, everything. No comparison in my view. The Prius is well worth the $3000 premium (I think that's about the price difference). If I buy a hybrid, that's the car.

At any rate, we really couldn't be more pleased with our two Acuras.
Very happy with the car after 3.5 years, 45K miles, perfect family car, fun to drive, hauls my stuff, great handling/mobility in all road conditions. The only let down are the mpgs, which average 17-19 mpg, but that's to be expected from a 2 ton SUV with a Thule roof rack permanently effing up the drag coefficient. I have gotten up to 22-23 mpg on long highway trips with the pod and the bikes on the car and a full load of family and gear in it, which really isn't so bad.

I met somebody who has part ownership in a big bus RV. He took it to the Baker to Death Valley race, and it was soooo nice sitting in there as the temperature climbed.

In my mind "best" doesn't equate to quietest, it may to you.
"Music blaring"? I can hear my Baroque over the engine so I'm happy. I think it's an extremely responsive engine. 220 plus hp is plenty for my "baby" carrier which is the main reason I own it.
Safety and practicality were higher on the list of criteria when I bought the Forester. This thing beat the CRV, Rav 4, Q7, Murano and XC 70.
It also happens to be good value for money for me.
The Forester costs US$70,000. (yes that's a 7 with 4 zeros)
Audi Q7 starts at US$190,000; Nissan Murano US$100,000; Volvo XC 70 - US$150,000; Porsche Cayenne starts US$175,000

I have a GMC Terrain (basically the Equinox) and I love it. Not sure where all of the Equinox bashing is coming from. Mine has a great ride, room for two bikes with the seats down, 32 miles per gallon, and all the bells and whistles anyone could need. So far, so good.
